Dr. Alison Matthews David and Eve Townsend will present the only North American collection at the Symposium, sharing many of the incredible student initiatives that have come from this collection.

FRC goes to Paris 💋 thanks to @thecreativeschl @torontomet @fashion_tmu & represented by FRC Director, Eve Townsend @eve.townsend and Dr. Alison Matthews David @alisonmd !

Originally designed as a pedagogical and research tool for costume makers, collectors, historians and fashion enthusiasts, study collections offer an intimate relationship with objects. Made up of garments, accessories, textile samples, reproductions and documentary archives all to be handled, examined, and analyzed, they encourage us to look beyond the historic or aesthetic value of objects into their materiality, uses and impact.

This symposium, organized by Nigel Guérin-Garnett and Marlène Van de Casteele of the ESMOD Research Lab @esmod1841 , therefore investigates the multiple meanings of a study collection and invites reflection on the categories, narratives and hierarchies that structure fashion history. At a time when issues of transmission, participation, digitalization, sustainability, and the decolonization of knowledge are encouraging museums and educational institutions to rethink their practices, the study collections offer emerges as an especially fertile space for experimentation. This event will bring together curators, university professors, educators, researchers and practitioners to explore the diverse forms that fashion-focused study collections can embody today. 𝙰 𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚖𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚘𝚏 𝙿𝚞𝚋𝚕𝚒𝚌 𝙼𝚘𝚛𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚢 𝚒𝚗 𝟸𝟶𝚝𝚑-𝙲𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚢 𝚂𝚞𝚖𝚖𝚎𝚛𝚢 𝚂𝚙𝚊𝚒𝚗

🌡️🌞 With colder weather settling here, what better way to warm up than by reminiscing about summer?
👩🏻‍🏫🔎 For my last guest lecture in the 𝙵𝚊𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙼𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚕 𝙲𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎 course at Toronto Metropolitan University, I shared highlights from my research on #swimwear in 20th-century summery Spain, exploring normative discourses and material culture.
🏖️📆 I revisited some ideas I presented last July at the Dress Devolution 2: The Beach & Beyond conference (Falmouth University). However, this time, I incorporated artifacts from the 𝙵𝚊𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝙲𝚘𝚕𝚕𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗! These garments bring textile materiality to life, helping to convey historical narratives and reflections on #beachwear.

📜⛱️ Female #BathingSuits were significant moral concerns. Year after year, civil and military authorities issued regulations aligned with Catholic dress codes to ensure “public morality” at beaches, pools, and rivers every summer— a moral “Winter of Souls” from May to Sept. ❄️
⛪️🌊 For Catholic moralists, Spanish beaches became a tsunami of indecency. However, religious authorities had to accept that the relentless application of public morality was no longer a priority for the civil authorities from the 1950s onward.
👮‍♂️🩱 This 1950s FRC pink stretchy swimsuit reminded me of how “elastic” the rules became for foreign tourists. While there was no explicit relaxation of bathing suit norms, Francoist authorities showed greater tolerance toward outlanders.
📏📰 Ultimately, the regime cared less about fabric measurements and more about projecting a positive international image and reaping the benefits of mass tourism. And they succeeded: check out this press clipping!
👙🐚 #Bikinis became symbols of (aper)tourism, but in less touristy areas, one-piece swimsuits without an overskirt and bathrobe were still scandalous! What is clear is that the beaches were the arenas of the moral-sartorial erosion of a rigorist regime in Southwestern Europe.

✨ Tᗰᑌ ᖴᗩᔕᕼIOᑎ ᖇEᔕEᗩᖇᑕᕼ ᑕOᒪᒪEᑕTIOᑎ ✨

🕰️👗 Founded in 1981 by Professor Katherine Cleaver and reimagined by Dr. Ingrid Mida in 2013, the ᖴᖇᑕ began as a collection of donated garments and accessories. This vibrant fashion archive guards a curated assemblage of over 3,500 garments, accessories, and other fashion-related items dating from the early 1800s to the present.

👨‍🏫👩‍🎓 Full of antique garments and vintage designer finds, ᖴᖇᑕ was initially a teaching resource to make fashion history tangible in classrooms or through on-site tours.

🗃️📜🔍 Today, ᖴᖇᑕ is a treasure trove for object-based research. This unique and invaluable collection is available by appointment for all TMU students, faculty, community members, and visiting scholars like me! During my research stay at Tᗰᑌ, I have the opportunity to enrich my postdoc project exploring garment materiality at the ᖴᖇᑕ.

💎👙 Thank you, Eve Townsend, ᖴᖇᑕ Director and Fashion Lecturer, for fostering a positive and welcoming environment that sparks critical dialogues, meaningful observations, and a careful hands-on research experience.

A special day celebrating jewelry, playing dress up, and reconnecting with friends @mfaboston. The exhibition “Dress Up” and the newly renovated Kaplan jewelry gallery are now on view! 💎✨

I spent two years researching and cataloging the Carole Tanenbaum collection of costume jewelry which would become the foundation for Dress Up, and I loved every moment of it. To finally see those beauties on view - and sharing a space with the Maltese Cross cuffs from the Verdura Museum Collection! - was incredibly rewarding.

Thank you, @samuel_snodgrass for being my ever dazzling date (who else thinks he ought to be the new face of @verdurajewelry ? 🙋🏻‍♀️). And a special shoutout to the women who fostered my love of jewelry and continue to mentor and inspire me every day @jewelcurator @eve.townsend @bellaneyman It was so special to celebrate with you ❤️
