Congrats to the 2026 Nuyakuk Tower crew on another successful season!

This season marks the fourth year BBSRI has operated the Nuyakuk site, and crews counted a whopping 3.3 million sockeye past the towers. To determine counts crews ascend a tower, one on each bank, every hour, 24/7. Polarized glasses, riffle dampeners, flash panels and a keen eye all play a vital role in determining an accurate count of fish passage.

Counting is just the half of it - crews also utilize a beach seine to determine even more detailed information about the run. Salmon caught in the beach seine are sampled for their scales as well as ASL (age, sex, length.) This information helps fisheries managers determine the age and brood stock of future runs, leading to a more sustainable and successful fishery long term.

Great job again to @castaway.kev @chandler_haase @evretrab for a job well done!

There’s not a place in the great state of Mississippi that I’d rather be at during the summer. Until 2027 5184, 'Kiwi' is out #summercamp #counsellor #collegestudent
