Take a moment to watch this short video about Film Hub South West, created by inspiring Bristol-based @siddiqui_media, and featuring a few of the incredible filmmakers and film exhibitors in our community.

With a network of over 200 exhibitors as part of the UK wide BFI Film Audience Network, Film Hub South West, led by Watershed, has been supporting film exhibitors to bring more films to more people across the region since 2012. We are also home to BFI Film Academy which creates opportunities for emerging talent in the screen industry and BFI NETWORK which has been providing access to funding and industry-backed professional development to producers, writers and directors aged 18 and above since 2018.

We wanted to create something that truly celebrates the people and initiatives coming out of the work we do and hopefully demystifies the ways in which we can support film makers and film exhibitors at a regional level.

“We believe it all begins with cinema.” - Maddy Probst, Head of Film, Watershed

Check out the full campaign video in our bio to find out more....

All this is made possible thanks to the support of BFI awarding funds through the National Lottery.

It’s only been a week and we already miss our last cohort of grads 🥺
Monday will be our first week in December with no grads and it feels so strange!
We’ve now had over 30 young people join our Create Futures programme and we can’t wait for the next cohort in January.
To our recent grads - we’re so proud of you. Keep in touch and keep Swindon creative 💪🏼✨

We will also be hosting a quiz before hand with some goodies available to the winners! Make sure to dress to impress with our 80s themed dress code to help celebrate the film and its legacy for the decade!

We still have tickets to the event available on Create Studios’ website so get them while you can!

To accompany this week’s showing of 'Blur: To the End', we’ve chosen a few music documentaries and live show films that are worth checking out.

Blur: Live at Wembley Stadium (2024) - The follow up film to 'Blur: To the End' shows much of what 'To the End' builds up anticipation for. Stylistically opposite and a brilliant companion piece that allows you to witness the excitement and energy of the band’s biggest show yet.

The Velvet Underground (2021) - chronicles the inception of The Velvet Underground, offering an in depth exploration of the band’s place and legacy amongst the 1960s New York art scene.

Summer of Soul (2021) - Celebrating black music by capturing the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969, featuring performances from Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension and many more. features by never before seen footage of the event and interviews placing the event’s significance within music history and forefronting the celebration of black music and community.

Stop Making Sense (1984) - an invigorating concert film that captures the infectious energy of Talking Heads during their 1983 tour. The film celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year and received a reissue last year from A24 that shows the film's momentous energy has still not slowed down.

Gimme Shelter (1970) - Worth watching for perhaps different reasons, 'Gimme Shelter' captures the infamous free live show put on by the Rolling Stones, made even more disastrous as the Hells Angels were invited to be security. The film captures in real time the chaos of the event, which resulted in the killing of an attendee by a Hells Angel member.

Film Hub South West is thrilled to be collaborating with a wonderful cohort that will develop their practice and film event ideas as part of Beyond Boundaries 360.

Read about the group, and discover the South West creatives who are excited to expand film exhibition in the region.

Each participant has a strong interest in film and cinema, a cleaar commitment to inclusion, and a motivation to develop their work and practice. Over 6 months, the participants will work collaboratively to develop film events from idea to screen, utilising knowledge and skills that are in the group and that will be gathered over the sessions.

Our fourth pick this week is from Henry (@tickle_bones__ ), discussing Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s 1997 film, Cure. A chilling addition to Kurosawa’s filmography and to the boom of Japanese horror being produced at the time of its release, a worthwhile film to check out this Halloween!

“Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s underrated psych horror Cure (1997) is a film that feels as though it is actively hostile to the viewer. With a simple plotline exploring themes of social and moral unease as our antagonist, a mysterious man with an innate ability to hypnotise seemingly normal upstanding people into committing murder, and our straight edged protagonist detective hot on his trail.

The film blends the best of esoteric J-horror with french new wave
to create a surreal, tense experience that will leave those that watch it feeling profoundly changed by it’s foreboding ideas and atmosphere. It is a must watch for all fans of foreign cinema and horror lovers alike.”
