“Cemetery Angels of San Francisco III”
2007
32 x 78 x 3”
Holga photograph, mixed media on wood door w glass
Photo: Max Wedge
> From Cemetery Series: Timothywilliams.org

Each photograph limited edition of 200

CEMETERY ANGELS SERIES
Warren Williams favourite camera is the Russian plastic Holga. Originally made in the then USSR for schools as an inexpensive teaching device the camera features only 2 light settings and 2 focus settings. Artists soon discovered the hidden charms of the camera’s hard to soft focus effects in a single image and especially how light bled onto the film negative producing uncontrollable ghost like effects. Many photographers tape their Holgas to negate this effect yet still light can make its way onto the film. Sometimes the film is blacked out from overexposure. One never knows how the film will process. Each picture taken is a roll of the dice and these exciting, haunting and totally un-predictable qualities of the camera are what attracts Warren Williams.

In 2007 Warren Williams first began using the camera in cemeteries in San Francisco which dated back to the 1800’s. The old weather worn tombs and the Holga worked perfectly together. The photographs were mounted on foam core and epoxied inside custom porthole wood frame boxes with plexiglass and metal bolts.
Later he traveled to Spain with his then wife, Rainbow Underhill. The two would visit any cemetery they came across for photo shoots.
Each photograph is a limited series of 200. Each custom porthole box is a one of kind signed to the collector. Sized to order. Artwork Photo: Max Wedge Photography
