WHAT THE HELL IS EVEN MUSCLE TENSION? 😂

Ask 5 massage therapists what muscle tension feels like and you’ll probably get 10 different answers.

To me, tension usually feels like an area that’s abnormally stiff, restricted, or almost “sticky.”

And unfortunately, you can’t just look at someone’s back and magically see where all the tension is—unless you’re THAT amazing 😂. Most of the time, you actually have to feel and explore the tissue.

One simple way I assess it is by gently pushing, picking up, or moving the muscle in different directions.

⬆️⬇️⬅️➡️

If the tissue moves easily one way but feels noticeably restricted in another, that direction might be worth exploring a little more.

But here’s the important part:

You don’t need to find “muscle tension” to give someone a good massage.

At the end of the day, your mission is pretty simple: communicate, explore, and make the massage feel good for the person you’re working on.

If they’re relaxed and enjoying it… what else really matters? 🤷‍♂️

PART 2: RELEASING YOUR PARTNER’S UPPER BACK 🙌

The upper back is more than just the upper traps. Before getting into deeper work, warm up the muscles around the scapula.

Start with a relaxed fist and sink your knuckles into the muscles around the upper angle of the scapula. Keep your wrist relaxed and use your body weight by leaning forward instead of trying to generate force from your shoulder and arm.

If your wrist starts getting tired, reinforce it by wrapping your opposite hand around your working wrist. Your hands should guide the pressure—your body should generate most of the force.

For a more advanced and precise technique, use a relaxed thumb and reinforce it with your other hand. Instead of pushing hard with the thumb itself, keep it relaxed and let your other hand drive the pressure. This gives you much better control and palpation without burning out your thumb.

Need more pressure? You can progress to using your elbow, but palpate with your fingers first so you know exactly where you’re working.

When you find an area of increased tension, gradually hold comfortable pressure and pay attention to how the tissue responds. Communicate with your partner throughout and reduce or stop pressure if it’s painful, causes numbness/tingling, or doesn’t feel right.

Massage safe, use your body—not just your hands—and stay tuned for PART 3! 👀#MassageTips #MassageTherapy #UpperBackPain #UpperBackMassage #PartnerMassage

PART 1: RELEASING YOUR PARTNER’S UPPER BACK! 🙌

This technique is called the muscle squeeze and lift.

It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: squeeze the upper trap, gently lift the muscle, and move it around based on what feels good for your partner.

One thing to watch out for—this can get really tiring on your hands if you grip too hard. You don’t need to death-grip the muscle to make the technique effective.

If your hands start getting tired, change your position. You can kneel or stand to give yourself better leverage and use more of your body weight.

One of the biggest things to remember with massage: your hands don’t always need to generate the force. Position your body well, use your body weight, and let your hands guide the movement.

Save this and try it on your partner! Part 2 coming next 👀#massage #bunt #love #partner

Every therapist has heard it.

“Yeah, I’ve been doing the stretches.”

Meanwhile, the home exercise sheet has been sitting in the exact same spot since the last appointment collecting enough dust to qualify as an archaeological discovery. 😂

The funny part? Most people don’t need perfect consistency. Even a few minutes a day can make a real difference over time. The hardest part is simply remembering to start.

No judgment—we’ve all procrastinated something before.

🤔Underrated posture exercise…If you cue it right.
.
The movement can help open up space in your sternum, ribs, and shoulders. Single or both arms. Almost every exercise can help improve your posture depending on how you approach it.
.
If you’ve been told you have tight biceps that causing rounded bad posture and you are only stretching it. Maybe you should try loading them instead.

⏱️⏳some is better than none
.
We all have busy schedules, sometimes you just have to get in what you can. 15-20mins can be enough for a good workout.
.
My clients see consistent results because we are realistic with our time. Before I create a rehab or/and exercise program, I ask what their schedule is like and design a routine according to the time they have. It’s easier to build exercise habits that way. A perfect written program is useless if you have trouble sticking to it. Consistency is key 🔑
.
A quick lower body workout. 2 sets each , 10-15 reps. In and out.

🔺Movement options + 🔺strength = 📉tightness and pain.
.
Your brain will continue to guard stiff joints and muscles if you don’t teach it how to move in different ways under load.
.
It’s kind of like a video game — unexplored areas feel unfamiliar and unsafe until you spend time navigating them.
.
When you practice the movements you struggle with and gradually load them, your brain starts to feel safer because it knows you’re strong in these positions. And when it feels safer, it often turns down pain and tension.
.
Build strength through variety. Give your body more options. Feel more freedom to move.
.
Comment below, how often do you explore different movements ?
