POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Exactly one year ago, I was driving to a campground in Timbisha (Death Valley) to prepare for something that already felt otherworldly. The next day, Oct 31st, I would begin my @fastestknowntime attempt of the Lowest to Highest (CA) route. It was part fundraiser and part prayer run, but it was also a chance to begin to tell a difficult story. This is why the film crew was there: to not only document a physical feat, but to also help me create something bigger than the physical world. 2024 was the year I was supposed to begin preventative surgeries as someone with a BRCA1 mutation, but, when I scored my first ever professional athlete contract, 2024 turned into a year of final offering instead. 2025 would be the surgery year, so this FKT was my last big effort with the body I’d known (and slowly learned to love) for 35 years. It would be a chance to share the grief my family carries, and to also show up for others. The lesson of letting go that 2025 has become (so literally) began that very Halloween morning (and comically when Patrick put too much turmeric in my breakfast oatmeal). Over the following ~2.5 days I took to complete the 132-mile route, it was the community and the promise to carry a prayer bundle to the summit of Tumanguya (Mt. Whitney) that got me to the finish. I was so depleted the night before the final mountain, but somehow, I felt carried. Thus, I present to you snippets from the film: OFRENDA, were the narrative is actually driven by an unscripted conversation my sister @therenearanda and I had on a bedroom floor in the @thehostelcaliforniabishop the night after a friend’s wedding. It is a film about bodies. Poetry. Holding space. And obviously, about running a challenging route through various Indigenous lands. And it’s a scary thing to not only create something, but to also trust others to bring your vision to life. Thank you to director @the.benevolent.metalhead and production @41westproductions for believing in my story and for elevating such humanness to the screen. Thank you to all the crew and pacers who showed up and suffered with me. This is what is incredible to me, what we accomplish not because of others but WITH others. 🙏🏽❤️
