Today my dad is 8 years sober.

19 year old me did not understand alcoholism. I had no empathy. All I knew was my dad’s heath was seriously declining, you could cut my family’s tension with a knife, and vodka tasted like nail polish remover. Just stop drinking it. How was that not an easy decision?

The thing is.. it’s not a decision. Alcoholism is a disease. No amount of willpower or love for your family can change the chemicals in your body that wake up saying “we need vodka in our system to reach homeostasis because we have received it daily for so long and can’t function without it.” My dad’s dependency on alcohol was not showcased in chaotic, messy, embarrassing ways. Scarier, it was just his “normal”. His Advil. Discreet and hidden within the most loving, hard working, supportive dad around.

June 19th is a constant reminder of how incredibly lucky I am to get to hang out with my parents. Together. Under one roof. On Earth. That they get to meet their first grandchild in one short month. That God was able to instill strength in my dad and compassion & forgiveness in me. I just simply will never be able to take for granted how beautiful life is. And for that, I am so grateful for my dad’s journey to sobriety.

Today my dad sits on the board at the Behavioral Center and is an AA sponsor for addicts helping to guide them through the program that saved him 8 years ago. @ewald2768 - I love you and I’m so proud to be your daughter.

7 years sober. My dad is an alcoholic. “Is” because recovery never really ends. It is an ongoing day by day fight. My dad wasn’t a crazy belligerent pass-out-on-the-floor drinker. Almost scarier, his disease was discreet and unrecognizable to most… until it wasn’t. Vodka became his Advil. His body so reliant on it that he didn’t feel “normal” without it.

This date is a constant reminder of how incredibly lucky my family is to be able to celebrate these milestones together. A reminder of how my dad’s sobriety journey has taught me more about forgiveness, redemption, resilience, and patience with God more than anything else in my life. And a constant reminder to simply show wild compassion and understanding to everyone you meet.

Happy lucky #7 Daddio. I know our bond is as strong as it is today because of the climb it took to get here. But getting to see this view with you… worth it. @ewald2768
