Knock. Knock. 😉

Last night 5 strong ALPHA woman sat together discussing life. Discussing things were working on, where we wanna go, where we've been. What were going to do next. How are we going to do it.

We got sh** done!

I love my alpha friends who care enough to check on me. Who "knock on my pumpkin" and make sure I'm not squishy mushy inside.

Friends who love me enough to tell me when I'm being a screwball. And are strong enough to not feel threatened by my strong personality.

I've noticed it's my strong friends who can all sit together and all be friends. Though we be strong, different individuals. We respect each other, and we admire each other, and we have each other's backs. We're friends 😉
And I feel so blessed to have Y'all'z.

Socorro Farmers Market Woman RoCK!!!!
Luv you guys!

Food deserts ... Places in our country where communities lack access to affordable, fresh, healthy & organic food.

What can we do about them? How can we get healthy organic food into the hands of the people living there?

Produce food locally.
Turn a dead piece of earth into a beautiful garden following regenerative practices, and share your abundance and gained knowledge with others around you.

I started 13 seasons ago here in Socorro, New Mexico with a small patch of dirt in front of my house, along the main highway, next to our business. I grew a ton of food there for my family, shared with our friends, and found my local market I'm involved in today.

Food insecurity faced by people in food deserts can be lessened by such farmers markets. Not just by the food shared there but through programs which make food at the market more affordable for those hit hardest financially in our communities.

Here in Socorro, our market participates in SNaP programs. People can bring their SNaP cards to market and receive wooden tokens to spend at the market.

We also 'Double Up' the tokens giving out $2 silver coloured coins to use on fresh produce for every $2 worth of tokens received. It's a great program.

Some vendors also accept WiC, Senior WiC, and FreshRx.
This allows our community to purchase the food they need, the food they want, locally, and affordable.

That's a great start to help lesson the pressure in our food desert here in New Mexico.

We'll be out on the Plaza 'til the end of this month. And then we'll head inside where we'll keep sharing our bounty with Y'all'z in winter.

See you at the market,

got microgreens?
Now available at Tuesday Markets from yours truly 💚

These are radish, and oh so yummy. If you've only tried mung bean or alfalfa sprouts at a restaurant, you're in for a treat. My Radish Microgreens are zesty. And super fresh. There's other differences between sprouts & microgreens also.

Both are herb or vegetable seedlings that are harvested at an early stage of growth, but Microgreens are generally harvested within two weeks after germination. They are larger in size than sprouts yet smaller than baby greens.

According to Marc Oshima, co-founder and CMO of AeroFarms, the largest microgreens provider in the United States, "Microgreens are up to five times more nutrient dense than their mature counterpart. And they are better for the environment, requiring 95% less water and 99% less land than field farming."

Very Well Fit says they're "packed with nutrients and have tons of health benefits." They are "chock full of vitamins and minerals, & antioxidants." *One study found that "radish and broccoli microgreens had powerful anti-inflammatory effects."

Add some to your meals, sandwiches, or top off your soups with my zesty microgreens to sneak in more nutrition and a punch of fresh flavour.

I'm growing these orjanically in organic soil from a childhood friend back home, Kathy @kellogggarden (so proud of her!)

At my new home I have an inside grow room 🌱 Super excited to see all the goodness I will be bringing you from it. Microgreens are just the beginning.

See ya at Market 🎪

When you are a Market Gardener, and it's Labour Day, you labour 😁

Plants still need water, weeds still grow. Fruit & veggies still need to be picked.

I worked from sun up to sun down and had one of the best labour days I've had in ...
Idk when.

Hope you had a good weekend, too! Glad to see some of you out in the sun having some fun, resting from your normal 9 to 5.

Cheers to a great weekend, and a great summer

Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It is what sunflowers do.
Helen Keller

Meet the humble sunflower. She's not just a pretty face. She brings smiles and feelings of euphoria, and she works wonders on the soil.

Planting a field of sunflowers is not just about the joy you feel when you see it. It's not just about the food it supplies the birds or even the pollinators it brings in. Planting sunflowers is an excellent way to pull toxins out of any field.

Phytoremediation is a process that employs various types of plants to remove, transfer, stabilize, and/or destroy contaminants in the soil, water and air. Compared to other cleanup methods, such as soil excavation or pumping polluted groundwater, phytoremediation is a clean, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way to reclaim and reuse land that has been tainted by poisonous chemicals and heavy metals.

Sunflowers are not only able to absorb lead, but other dangerous heavy metals such as arsenic, zinc, chromium, copper, and manganese. Probably the most astounding example of phytoremediation was the use of a type of sunflower to clean up contaminated soil in the Ukraine following the Chernobyl disaster, one of the worst nuclear power plant accidents in history. Other communities from far and wide have learned about and employed the magic healing of sunflowers.
Farmers Almanac dot com

Be sure and haul the sunflowers off the field after the season ends, or the toxins stored in the stems, leaves, and heads will return to your field .

got pumpkins?
You can add in some of these plants to your pumpkin patch for a beautiful fall harvest:
Zucchini, Cucumber, Hubbard Squash, Corn, Melons, Peas, Sunflowers, Nasturtium, Marigold, Lettuce, Dill, Chamomile, Lavender, Radishes.

Companion planting is one of my favourite ways to plant intensively and produce a higher yield of vegetables in a small space.

I've grown a ton of pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes, herbs and greens in a small container garden forever, and am now growing on ONLY 1/2 acre for my market garden.

Without using heavy equipment, I can plant in 30 inch beds intensively and produce a tremendous amount of produce for market. Oh, and speaking of 'taters, you'll wanna keep those out of your pumpkin patch.

Potatoes are deep-rooted plants, which means their roots take up immense space in the soil. As a result, pumpkin plants can’t get the nutrients they need. Both plants are very competitive! Potatoes are also a bit of a bug magnet in the garden and may lure flea beetles and other leaf-eating bugs to your pumpkin patch.

Also avoid planting fennel with your pumpkins because it can stunt you plant’s growth. Fennel is generally considered a “bully” companion plant and is not planted too close to other food plants. (My advice, grow herbs mostly in their own containers.)

Lastly, you'll want to avoid kale, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, cauliflower, broccoli, and so on near your pumpkins. Brassicas eat up the nutrients in the soil.

So off I go, dirt under my nails, to add some of the above fall crops to my beautiful pumpkin patch.

See ya at the market ✌️😎

We need to replace mass production with production by the masses.
JM Fortier

JM continues ...
It's not about regenerative farming, organic farming, it's not a label because the label will always be co-opted.

While supermarkets might now stock 'organic' produce, we believe the essence of organic farming extends beyond labels!

It revolves around nurturing human connections, celebrating local presence, and offering a more tailored and personal approach.

Such connections flourish predominantly within local communities. And that my friends cannot be duplicated on a large scale.

Getting ready for Socorro Farmers Market.
Saturday 9 to Noon.
At the Historic Plaza

At the market manaña you'll find fresh, locally grown produce, baked goods, and all sorts of delightful finds.

In addition to cash, many growers (like me) accept credit cards, SNAP benefits, and other nutrition benefits like Fresh Rx, DUFB & WiC.

🥦🍎 🍒🥒🍑🍯
A great way to eat healthy is to buy a spectrum of colourful fruits and veggies, full of great nutrients, including antioxidants and phytonutrients. The more color variety, the better! And grab some bee pollen while you're at it.

See ya there!
JANO ✌️
