POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

📣 Our latest blog comes from Molly Leeming, doctoral student at the @theuniversityofsheffield who joined the museum on a placement earlier this summer.

Her focus was on cataloguing our Films and Filming magazines to make them accessible for researchers. She reveals how the letters section functioned much like a social media forum today, how socio-cultural changes can be traced through them, and how they uncover gay subtexts ✉️

Head to the news section of our website to read more - link in bio.

It was great to support the magic lantern show @nixpriory with @lightbearlane and Lanternist Richard Crangle of the @magiclantern_society last week!

We brought a pop-up display of our collection of magic lantern material and slides for attendees to handle to complement a very special evening. It was a fantastic venue in which to bring the wonder of magic lanterns to life, with piano accompaniment and some great local slides in the show - thank you for having us!

Magic lantern mania continues next week with our kids' craft session, Make Your Own Magic Lantern Slides, on 27th October - just drop in!

🎞️ The Museum had a stand at Exeter UK Gaming and Comic Con on Sunday to promote our incredible collections to a whole new audience!

We also made a few friends in the actors section where we were based, meeting some amazing artists of the big and small screen!

Chris Barrie of Red Dwarf, @guillaumerivaud of Poldark, Carl Newman @balletbat1989 from Batman and @nathanjpegler, who has appeared in countless TV series all visited our stand. It was an absolute pleasure to meet them all! ⭐️

Join us for Exeter's Only Magic Lantern Show! ✨️

During this special nineteenth-century-inspired evening, you will experience the enchanting world of magic lanterns - the most popular form of moving images before cinema.

The evening will bring to life not only the history of magic lanterns but also give us a taste of what these shows would have been like.

With a screen specially designed for the atmospheric Great Hall at St Nicholas Priory, live musical accompaniment for our stories and a pop-up display from The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum's extensive collections of magic lantern slides and ephemera, it'll be a unique experience.

Doors open at 6:45 - ticket link in bio!

Lucy is Professor of Film Philosophy at Queen Mary University London and has published extensively on stardom and feminist approaches to film.
She has been advisor on exhibitions on Marilyn Monroe at the @nationalportraitgallery and film seasons at the @britishfilminstitute and provided the introduction to the new book, "Encounters with Marilyn Monroe", published by @aurora_metro. This will be on sale at the event (cash only).
