A fun surprise - my fieldwork gear photo is featured in a @geographical_magazine article about @shanewinser and 50 years of @rgs_ibg Explore 🤩

This feature feels particularly special because it was at Explore in 2024 that I met Esther and David from @actbiglivesmall who kindly lent me lots of the gear I took on my fieldwork adventure.

I’m getting even more excited for this year’s Explore, I reckon it’s going to be quite a party!

(Also special thanks to Alexandra for your message telling me you’d seen my photo in this month’s edition!)

Next month, I’ll be back at the @rgs_ibg for the 50th anniversary of Explore! This will be my third time attending and I’m looking forward to catching up with friends, hearing from some incredible speakers, and getting inspired for post-PhD adventures!

I’m also excited to be speaking as part of two breakout sessions:

🚲 On Saturday afternoon, I’ll be contributing to a session on ‘Planning Bicycle Expeditions,’ hosted by @carboncyclekate (and alongside @judekriwald who I met at the first Explore I attended back in 2024!)

✈️ On Sunday morning, I’ll be leading a session on ‘Embracing Flight-Free Fieldwork & Adventures,’ with Anna Hughes (Director of @flightfreeuk) and Rye Hickman (who hiked across Devon as part of his PhD fieldwork). We’ll be talking about local expeditions and alternatives to flying. As the climate crisis continues to intensify, I’m excited to be bringing this important conversation to Explore, and to encourage attendees to consider fieldwork adventures closer to home.

Interested in planning your own expedition? Join me in London from 6-8 November for a weekend full of inspiration and practical advice about embarking on your own purposeful journey! Explore was such an important part of planning for my PhD fieldwork, the Farming Futures Cycle Tour, so if you’re planning your own fieldwork, I would definitely recommend coming along.

Tickets are still available, learn more and book here 👉 www.rgs.org/explore

We had a fabulous and very thought provoking set of sessions yesterday on Sustainable Future Making and uneven Geographies. We had many international presenters presenting on very interesting and important projects with rich theoretical positions. Güldem Özatağan did a great job presenting for our Governing Sustainable Futures ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council funded research project @uniofexeter @exetergeography @rgs_ibg #rgsibgac26

I’m so excited to be hosting the Outdoor Swimming Research Forum again at Windermere.

We have an even bigger programme, with more talks, more themes, and more supporters.

It’s been a big effort balancing this side project alongside my role at UKCEH and my gnarly hip op’ this year. Thank you to my team for having my back and helping make it happen!

Stay tuned for updates next week 💙.

🎥 Note: All talks will be available on YouTube following the event. You can also find the 2024 talk links in my bio.

It was a pleasure to present at the #greenphoenix @exeterphoenix event yesterday. Invited by the’FEDUP’ group I spoke about ‘Place based action towards Just and Sustainable Food Systems’ I talked about the climate and social challenges rising from the current food system, including the rise of household food insecurity. My talk focused on place based action to address these challenges such as @sustainablefoodplaces @devonfoodpartnership @foodexetercharity @exequayside_farmersmarket with the multi scalar potential of regional food systems. Plus the critical need to center justice and equity in sustainable food action. We had some insightful and thought provoking questions from the audience. Some of which we’ll follow up at the next @foodexetercharity partnership meeting @exetergeography @uniofexeter #defendexeteruni Thanks to the organisers for the invitation
