A little #WaybackWednesday that means a lot to me.

Back in 2019, our doula, Vanessa Johnson, invited me to share my birth story for an Ex Fabula feature in partnership with Best Babies Zone, alongside other Milwaukee parents sharing their experiences.

At the time, I was still navigating motherhood and learning things I wish I'd known before giving birth. One of those things was just how serious the maternal and infant mortality disparities were right here in Milwaukee, especially for Black mothers and babies.

I remember learning about these disparities postpartum and wondering how something so important wasn't talked about more.

In Wisconsin, Black mothers continue to face a disproportionately high risk of pregnancy-related death. And according to the state's maternal mortality review, more than 90% of pregnancy-related deaths reviewed from 2021 were considered preventable.

That has stayed with me.

Looking back, this experience was one of the catalysts that eventually led me into mental health advocacy. It helped me understand how much our stories matter, how important postpartum support really is, and why we need to keep having conversations about maternal health, mental health, and the systems that affect families.

I'm grateful to Vanessa, Ex Fabula, Best Babies Zone, and every parent who shared their story. And looking at these old photos of our little family makes this memory even more special.

Sometimes you don't realize how much an experience is shaping you until years later.

Having spent the better part of the past decades in the non-profit space, my eyes have been opened to so many injustices, plights and challenges we as human beings face every day.

Having joined the @grmkefdn has afforded me the opportunity to celebrate the many organizations that are working so intentionally and with a deep passion, to make our worlds better.

Housing shouldn’t be a luxury only some have access to, which is why the work being done by @housingmke and the amazing team is not only bringing awareness but impact to those affected by housing challenges in Milwaukee.

I remember being on that stage #exfabula competing against my mother, lol.
One of the best experiences of my life.
It brought me so much joy enjoying these exceptional storytellers take the stage.
I really appreciate the work and the contributions Exfabula has made in the community.
I created these artworks in the crowd last night.
Now I gotta practice clapping and drawing at the same time. Lol

Our second teller for After Dark: For The Culture is Kwabena Antoine Nixon! (@iamikan)

He is an award-winning author, spoken word poet, TEDx speaker, and transformative facilitator.

Kwabena is dedicated to empowering communities through storytelling and truth. He is the CEO of @beinspiredworks, the founder Poetry Unplugged MKE and the creator of Real Men Real Talk, a barbershop-style healing circle for Black men.

His latest book, “Dear Black Boy: Futures Not Funerals — A Love Letter to Black Boyz,” is out now.

Our first featured teller for After Dark: For The Culture is Tina Nixon! (@nixon.tina) She is an esteemed poet, actress, author, mentor and motivational speaker.

Tina encourages individuals to celebrate life, capture their dreams, and cultivate self-love. In 2013, Tina founded My Sista’s Keepher, a youth empowerment organization that encourages young girls and women of all ages to discover the healing power of their voice and recover from the effects of trauma.

Tina is the recipient of several awards including from the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and YWCA.
