sometimes projects grow beyond their initial idea, and sometimes projects take more years than anticipated. @joelmidden and i are so very grateful and excited to finally share “Virtues vol. 1—Remixed & Reinterpreted” today. we started this collaboration in 2019, responding to some esoteric materials in my family history archive. we released our first EP in 2021, and at long last are sharing the remix album, with contributions from 15 of our favorite musicians and DJs~a beautiful queer family. we turned once again to the amazing design of @yeshi.co (a virtues design collaborator from the very beginnings) to co-create a custom website, built impeccably by mmmanyfold (michelle lim & david viramontes). with the website also came the prompt to commission music videos for each track, looping in another 20 of our favorite moving image makers~the queer family keeps growing. instagram has a limit of how many folks one can tag in a post, and this project has grown beyond that, so there will be another post just for the video makers. another special shoutout to the incredible @shashacruzr for providing her beautiful words to this project, in many of its iterations.

soon all the music will be available on your favorite (evil) streaming platforms. for now, please check out the website at virtuesvolumes.com. After nearly a year of demolition, cleaning, and remediation, The Lab is thrilled to open our back project space.

Our inaugural exhibition is titled Open Ears, presented in collaboration with @kadistkadist, and as part of their current major exhibition Makeshift Memorials, Small Revolutions. Works by Michael Rakowitz and Asha Sheshadri (@exfrenchtshirt) consider the political dimensions of sound as pathways of resilience, through the toppling of monuments and rematriation of looted museum objects. Please join us for an opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 5pm - 7pm.

The Lab’s new exhibition site is the result of our expansion into the entirety of the Main Auditorium and Assembly Hall of the historic San Francisco Labor Temple, now named the Redstone Building as a San Francisco Landmark for its characteristic early 20th century architecture. Throughout the current season, The Lab is inviting artists to explore and excavate this site, as we prepare to demolish the dividing wall and restore the historic Labor Temple footprint. Open Ears 👂

An exhibition in collaboration between KADIST San Francisco and The Lab.

‘Open Ears’ considers the social and political dimensions of sound, as it interweaves personal and collective histories and actions in relation to toppling of monuments and rematriation of cultural artifacts. Bringing together the works of Michael Rakowitz and Asha Sheshadri, ‘Open Ears’ prompts close listening as a pathway of resilience.

The latest episode has finally landed in the archive, featuring some all time favs from Henry Flynt, Baaba Maal & Mansour Seck, Roberta Eklund, and many many more.

Leading this post is a clip from the 1984 Hungarian film Eszkimó Asszony Fázik, or Eskimo Woman Feels Cold, which features music from Trabant (who appear in this episode) and stars their co-founder and frontwoman Marietta Méhes, seen here. Though the band apparently home-recorded plenty, the film’s soundtrack—a promotional 7” with little more than 10 minutes of music— was their only official release, yet that (along the handful of unreleased tracks that have circulated over the years) has been enough to earn them a cult following. (It also helps that co-founder Mihály Víg has gained further renown as a film composer— most notably for all of Béla Tarr’s films since the mid-‘80s—and even starred in Sántántangó.) Trabant’s catalog will get a little bigger in less than a week though with the release of a new self-titled archival comp from the always excellent label purge.xxx

Anyway, I haven’t been able to find the full film of this and none of the clips I’ve seen have subtitles so I have no idea what’s going on here but it looks and sounds good to me.

When I started making these mixtapes about a year ago, I somewhat arbitrarily named the first few after the volumes of the endless Proust novel I’ve been reading. This new one is the first installment to really lean into the theme of the corresponding novel—“Sodom & Gomorrah.” Consider it a mix for the end of Pride month: I like to picture the corporate sponsors discreetly taking down their displays to the sound of Meredith Monk’s ululations.

The A side focuses on femme voices (literally), with an emphasis on outsider stylings and extended techniques. While the first half eschews the male gaze, the B side is for the male gays. (Can’t remember where I stole that joke from.) Have to say, I’m proud of this one. (Link in bio.)
