Introducing Tylecodon Reticulatus, also known as “sifkop” or “sieve head”! This sturdy succulent species hails from South Africa (Southern Cape region, Namaqualand, Little Karoo) and Namibia, where it thrives in dry rocky coasts and mountains. With its distinctive brown stems and dense gnarled branches, Tylecodon Reticulatus adds a touch of rugged beauty to any collection. The plant’s old flower stalks create a unique crisscross framework of ‘spines’, forming a protective layer against potential browsers. Its compact, stem-succulent shrublet structure, measuring around 30 to 60 cm in diameter, showcases succulent leaves that are grey-green, downy or smooth, and cylindrical to spindle-shaped. 🌱 During the winter, Tylecodon Reticulatus blooms with erect yellowish-green flowers, adding a splash of color to its surroundings. 💛 Keep in mind that this remarkable succulent produces extremely small seeds, weighing less than 0.03 mg, which are carried by the wind to cracks and furrows in the soil for germination. #TylecodonReticulatus #SucculentLove #NatureInspired

Pelargonium mirabile, often referred to as the “holy grail” among plant collectors, holds a special place in the hearts of plant enthusiasts. Its exceptional characteristics and rare availability make it a coveted addition to any collection.

As a fellow plant nerd, I can truly appreciate the significance of showcasing such a prized plant. I played around with different positions and decided to go with a cascade style which is popular in the bonsai world. Erika Van Auker’s pottery designs are known for their artistry and attention to detail made it an easy choice. Erika’s pot is the perfect vessel to highlight this specimen.

This pairing not only enhances the visual appeal of the plant but also creates a harmonious display that reflects the passion and dedication of plant collectors. It is a testament to the love and appreciation we have for these botanical treasures.

Tylecodon paniculatus, commonly known as the Butter Tree, is an intriguing plant! This unique succulent is a “winter grower” that conserves water by shedding its leaves during hot summers and regenerating them in cooler months. Despite its slow growth rate, it can eventually reach heights of up to 8 feet. However collectors prefer the short and compact forms as they look better staged in shallow bonsai pots.
.
.
This specimen has been hard grown for over 20+ years which is how it has achieve this chunky compact form acquired through a private collection staged in an epic pot from Taiwan.

Did you know that the Elephant’s Foot is not your everyday succulent? This unique plant hails from the arid regions of South Africa, where it has evolved some truly extraordinary adaptations to survive in its harsh environment.

One of the most striking features of the Elephant’s Foot is its fascinating caudex. Resembling an ancient, weathered elephant’s foot, this thick, woody stem serves as a water reservoir during periods of drought. It stores water to sustain the plant during long dry spells, showcasing nature’s ingenious water-saving strategies.

But there’s more to this incredible succulent! Dioscorea elephantipes can live for decades, even centuries, making it a prized addition to any plant collector’s collection. The caudex grows larger and more sculptural with age, forming intricate patterns that tell the story of its endurance through time.

Interestingly, this plant has also caught the attention of scientists and researchers. Its ability to survive in extreme conditions has sparked interest in understanding its unique adaptations. By studying the Elephant’s Foot, scientists hope to unlock valuable insights that could enhance agricultural practices, conserve water, and promote sustainable farming in arid regions.

If you’re as captivated by the extraordinary resilience and beauty of Dioscorea elephantipes as I am, hit that share button to spread the word about this extraordinary plant. Let’s celebrate nature’s wonders together! 🌿✨ #DioscoreaElephantipes #plantenthusiast

Can’t get over how amazing and healthy this plant is from @exoticsucculents @ilovefatplants these growers are top notch! Thanks so much for making this New England grower so happy 🤩❤️

Fun fact, Centuries old desert plant
The Welwitschia Mirabilis is a plant which is endemic to the Namib desert in Namibia and Southern Angola. Named after Friedrich Welwitsch who "discovered" the plant in 1859, some of the specimen are estimated to be between 1000 and 2500 years old.

Last pic of ancient specimen in habitat 🤯
