WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28! 🛸👁️🫈🗿🔮📺 PRS’s 7th House presents an evening devoted to the strange, the speculative, and the wildly entertaining edges of nonfiction cinema, celebrating renowned film historian Gary D. Rhodes’s new book WEIRDUMENTARY—an instantly indispensable compendium of the pseudoscientific documentaries of the ’70s and ’80s—paired with a rare screening of obscure media collective EXP TV’s gloriously bizarre original film collage BIZARRE ENCOUNTERS WITH MYSTERIES FROM BEYOND THE AMAZING WORLD OF UNKNOWN FORCES IN SEARCH OF PSYCHIC PHENOMENA (2023)!

From ancient aliens to cryptids, the Bermuda Triangle to psychic powers, WEIRDUMENTARY explores a golden age of cinematic high strangeness, when films and TV programs sold to unsuspecting audiences as documentaries blurred the line between fact and fantasy with absolute conviction. Spurious experts! Questionable evidence! Low-budget dramatizations! Leonard Nimoy! Orson Welles! And millions of viewers who simply couldn’t look away.

Rhodes will offer a special presentation on the book and the history of the genre, followed by a conversation with the author, bringing his scholarly rigor, infectious enthusiasm, and lighthearted playfulness to this wonderfully weird corner of film history.

Then, plunge headfirst into the depths of the genre with EXP TV’s definitive, reverent—but affectionately hilarious—BIZARRE ENCOUNTERS…, a kaleidoscopic tapestry of classic, rare, and “what-the-heck-is-that-from?” phenome-film footage, originally created specifically for PRS!

Can you hurt a fern’s feelings? Do ghosts ride bicycles? Is Bigfoot actually from outer space? Can you telepathically transmit Charlie Chaplin movies? All these questions and more await in this expertly crafted excavation of the golden age of uncanny documentaries!

Fact or fiction? You decide.

SATURDAY MAY 30! 👣🛸👽🌀 (UPDATE: The WEIRDUMENTARY/BIZARRE ENCOUNTERS event has been postponed. The LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK screening will now take place at 7pm)

7th House presents a very special evening of cryptid lore, pseudoscientific documentaries, paranormal television, and cinematic high strangeness with two events celebrating the strange and wildly entertaining world of the “weirdumentary” — featuring renowned film historian Gary D. Rhodes presenting his new book WEIRDUMENTARY plus a screening of EXP TV’s definitive and psychotropic collage of classic and rare phenome-film footage, followed by a screening of the cryptid cult classic THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK (1972) and panel discussion led by filmmaker Matt Yoka!

The evening begins with Rhodes presenting WEIRDUMENTARY — an instant-classic compendium exploring the strange boom of ’70s and ’80s “phenome-films” examining everything from Bigfoot and psychic powers to UFOs, ancient aliens, and the Bermuda Triangle. Rhodes will offer a special presentation on the history of the genre followed by a conversation with the author and a rare screening of EXP TV’s immaculately titled original film collage excavating the golden age of uncanny documentaries.

Then, filmmaker Matt Yoka joins us for Charles B. Pierce’s singularly eerie backwoods docu-horror landmark THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK — the legendary shoestring-budget cult classic chronicling reports of the infamous Fouke Monster, a Bigfoot-like cryptid said to roam the woods and waterways of Arkansas. Following the screening, Yoka and guests will lead a panel conversation exploring the film’s singular legacy, regional monster lore, sightings, folklore, and the enduring appeal of America’s hairy backwoods cousins.

Fact or fiction? You decide. 👁️

This Saturday September 20th! EXP TV and 7th House welcome two hip hop heroes to The Philosophical Research Society for a mindblowing, intergalactic audiovisual odyssey: SONGS YOU CAN SEE - SPACEDUST, with live sets by EDAN and CUT CHEMIST!

For one night only, these two titans of boundary-breaking beats and sonically esoteric exploration unite on the PRS stage to present a rare screening of an entry from Edan and EXP TV’s Tom Fitzgerald’s intricate audio-visual video mixtape series SONGS YOU CAN SEE, accompanied by live DJ sets by both Edan and Cut Chemist!

SONGS YOU CAN SEE is a series of hour-long sight and sound collages that aim to stimulate/educate. Artist/disk jokk Edan plays the records. EXP TV’s Tom Fitzgerald lays the footage on top. Screening tonight: “SPACE DUST”, the emphasis is all things inner and outer space. Dig it, brothers and sisters...

A critically acclaimed DJ, MC, producer and songwriter with a global following, EDAN (aka The Humble Magnificent) is renowned for his unlikely take on hip-hop culture. Meshing a totally unique and hyper-literate emcee prowess with delicious deep-dive samples, he weaves complex tapestries of beats and rhymes with snippets of sweet soul, 60s psych-pop, Beatles-esque tape effects, prog rock loops, and beyond.

A founding member of underground hip hop titans Jurassic 5 and Grammy award winning Latin funk outfit Ozomatli, and a collaborator with DJ Shadow, experimental DJ and music archivist CUT CHEMIST is one of the world’s most celebrated Dus and producers - renowned for pushing the sonic boundaries of the medium and introducing listeners to his obscure musical discoveries.

Don’t sleep on this killer cosmic night to remember! Tix via link in @7th_ house’s bio or at prs.org/events! 🚀✨
