What a day at Aspen Ideas: Economy! 💡Day 2 brought us conversations that challenged how we think about wealth, work, and the future of our economy.

From revisiting Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations and exploring what it takes for America to build and compete, to examining how AI and automation are reshaping work, the day pushed us to think beyond economic growth and consider who gets to benefit from it.

Between two General Assemblies, engaging Deep Dive sessions, and connections that continued beyond the stage, Tulsa was full of new perspectives and ideas to take home.

What a way to kick off Aspen Ideas: Economy 2026! 💡

Day 1 brought us together in Tulsa for a day of fresh perspectives, meaningful connections, and conversations about the future of our economy.

From exploring Tulsa’s rich history and vibrant streets to exchanging ideas in seminars, deep-dive sessions, and our Opening General Assembly, we heard from leaders, thinkers, and innovators who challenged us to look at some of today’s biggest economic questions from different perspectives.

🎨 We also met Tulsa artist @rachelbhayes and explored her colorful City Jewel installation at Guthrie Green.

Rachel Hayes’s City Jewel comprises two sewn textile panels, each 30 by 40 feet, installed on either side of the stage at Guthrie Green. Hayes builds both compositions using the log cabin quilting technique — a pattern that begins at a center point and is built outward, strip by strip, radiating in bands of color — rendered here in saturated jewel tones that catch and diffuse Tulsa’s light. Log cabin quilting is a significant symbol of American heritage, representing the power of the American pioneer spirit, and reflects deep historic connections to Tulsa. The two panels also frame the city itself: downtown Tulsa remains visible through and behind the work, so the skyline becomes part of the composition. The panels extend a technique Hayes developed for a recent installation for the City of Aspen, translated to the scale and civic character of Guthrie Green. City Jewel is presented in partnership with Aspen Ideas: Economy held here in The Tulsa Arts District, October 13 – 15, 2026. As Aspen Ideas: Economy brings inquiry into place, prosperity, and community to Tulsa, Hayes’s patchwork offers a visual counterpart: a pattern built, like a city, from a shared center outward.
