My m̶i̶l̶k̶s̶h̶a̶k̶e̶ tactical urbanism brings all the b̶o̶y̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶y̶a̶r̶d̶ people to the city 🧋

There was SO much happening in the @cityofadelaide last week, with people everywhere in our streets, parks and venues.

I noticed that the busiest events all had something in common:
👉 They all used pop-up infrastructure.

Traffic cones. Milk crates. Low fencing. Rugs on the ground. An umbrella or two.

This cheap, temporary infrastructure (plus great tunes from local DJs) instantly brought our city to life, without breaking the bank.

This is "tactical urbanism": short-term, low-cost, scalable and adaptable interventions or trials that catalyse change in public spaces.

Encouraging greater city visitation doesn't always need costly incentives (or free car parking). These take a long time to plan and deliver anyway.

Sometimes we just need to do less – but quicky, and cheaply – to see if it works. We measure its success in real-time, then plan our next step in an informed way. If you fail fast, you learn fast.

Seeing so many people in the city this past week made me excited for its future. Whatever we did, it worked – and we should do more of it!

This is the Adelaide I'm proud of. Bring on the milkshakes!🧋

P.S. Did you notice that most of these activated spaces were repurposed on-street car parks? 👀

Captivating day at Cheese Fest 2026 with an engaging circus skills workshop for all ages. The fancy French chef on stilts was roving about. Lots of laughs hi fives, and many photos were taken with spectators. Plenty of family fun for everyone.

Today and tomorrow in Adelaide 17th and 18th of October 2026.

See you there tomorrow.

Did you know it's @adelaidedesignweek? 🛋️

There's pop-up design events happening all across the city until 5pm Sunday 18 October – and today I visited a few on the Every*Bike tour with @mood.racing.

The tour also overlapped with some of the @cityofadelaide "Houseblend" activations happening across the city's west.

Today's roll-out:
✅ Liverpool Street: @peter.rabbit.hindley, @yukudo_adl and @mydeadgrandpa.adl
✅ Gilbert Street: @leisurely_coffee, @idle.hands.adl and @shop_generator
✅ Under the Morphett Street Bridge
✅ BENCHED at @thequeensadelaide
✅ @yoke.exhibition.adw at @michi_australia

Adelaide is absolutely doing plenty this weekend.

Especially in the west. I mean... west is best? 🤩

See you at tonight's Adelaide Design Week closing party!

We're still riding high off the glory of the Couture Ball, which was without doubt *the* event of Adl Fashion Week ✨

Blakesby debuted an exciting new collection of high concept eveningwear, playfully nicknamed by some as 'bicornes and tricornes and bycockets, oh my!', which had the honour of closing the show atop fabulous gowns from @couturelovemadness_ in the grand finale 🎩
