🧠 Understanding Stress: The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) 📈

Ever wondered how your body responds to stress? 🤔 Dr. Hans Selye, known as the “Godfather of Stress,” introduced the concept of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) in 1936, which describes the body’s predictable response to stress. 💪 Whether it’s a workout, a big project, or everyday challenges, GAS helps us understand how stress can build resilience—or lead to burnout if not managed well.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the 3 stages of GAS:

1️⃣ Alarm Reaction 🚨: This is the initial “fight or flight” response. The body releases stress hormones like adrenaline, preparing you for action. Think of it as your body’s instant boost of energy to tackle a challenge!

2️⃣ Resistance 🧘: In this stage, the body starts to adapt to the stressor. Your stress response stabilizes, but you’re still on high alert. This is where resilience is built if the stress is manageable—but it’s crucial to rest and recover here!

3️⃣ Exhaustion 😴: When stress is prolonged without adequate recovery, the body enters exhaustion. Resources are depleted, making you more susceptible to fatigue, illness, or burnout.

✨ Why it matters: Not all stress is bad! Short-term or “hormetic” stress—like a quick cold plunge or workout—can actually build resilience. But chronic, unrelenting stress can push us into exhaustion.

Our Contrast Therapy Classes offer a unique experience to harness the power of hormetic stress. Through sauna and cold plunge cycles, paired with mindfulness techniques, we guide participants to embrace the benefits of controlled stress. Our meditation techniques help you tap into the resistance stage, enhancing your body’s adaptability to stress while reaching a calm, balanced state. 🌊🔥

Takeaway: Embrace good stress, balance with mindful recovery, and let our classes guide you in building resilience for a healthier, more adaptable mind and body. 🌱

Catch one of our classes at @alchemy_springs on Tuesday Nov 12th or 19th at 5pm PT!
