I was finishing up work at a Karangahape vintage shop in early 2023 when @teamsportsteam started digitally imploring everyone to cancel their plans and show up for a gig at Neck of the Woods that night.

The lineup didn’t make sense, looking like your average Others Way lineup of the time without any of the appropriate marketing and fanfare preceding it.

On the way home I ran into Annabel, who clarified that members of international exports like Fazerdaze and Princess Chelsea were amongst the 32+ person orchestra squeezed into the Neck basement, while some of the most prevalent names in the collective would be donning their frontperson hat to perform a new track accompanied by the backing band, before scuttling back behind their instruments to let other songwriters, both in and out of the orchestra, take control of the frey.

Read more about the @explodingrainboworchestra , their most recent performance at Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, and how Joshua Worthington-Church @bilbum_baggins wrangles it all together.

I love the @explodingrainboworchestra 🪩
It's my favourite musical event that happens in this country.

Fancy photos by @connorcrawford.nz, non fancy photos by me & @wrenneso on my crappy keychain camera 📸

In November last year I was in a rough spot mentally, and I had the honour of being one of the featured singers for songbook vol. 4, those 4 days of rehearsals and performance brought me out of my funk and introduced me to some of the sweetest and coolest musicians I've ever met.

It was a challenge for this years Jukebox to relearn reading sheet music and try to get my trumpet playing back to where it was when I was 12, but I wouldn't miss being a part of something this cool for the world. I can't wait for a new government and a new arts minister to throw so much cash at @bilbum_baggins to make this the institution that it deserves to be.

Also @henry_the_horn gave me an Outlaws of Thunder Junction copy of Mana Drain. These are two equally significant events.

Liz here! I’m singing an unreleased song with the Exploding Rainbow Orchestra this Sunday (and playing trumpet for the rest of the night). (Ben is also playing saxophone in the band)

The song is a conversation with a Tūi (this is a bird).

The demo i submitted had acoustic guitar and vocal. It has been exploded into an arrangement for a 40 piece band. (💀) Is there a harp? Yes.

If you’re a fan of independent NZ music and live in Tāmaki Makaurau, you’ll probably enjoy this. It’s a special weird thing that could only sprout from our music community.

Anyone who was at last year’s Exploding Rainbow Orchestra event will remember the breathtaking guest conduction of Rāhana Tito-Taylor… and good news, he’s back! Now a full time member of the orchestra, Rāhana’s mesmeric Rangatuone conduction is like nothing we’ve ever seen. Here he is to tell us about it!
