We’ve spent the past five Northern Lights seasons traveling across Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Greenland, staying in some pretty incredible places along the way.

From watching the aurora through the glass walls of a heated cabin in Fairbanks, Alaska, to seeing the Northern Lights from an expedition ship sailing through Greenland’s fjords, we’ve learned that there are a lot of different ways to experience the aurora borealis.

Today is Alaska Day. My time spent in this place was a significant chapter that shaped me in ways I still feel the effects of to this day; setting me on a trajectory that I would probably never have chosen on my own accord.

I still remember flying over and seeing the Alaska Range for the first time, landing in Fairbanks and taking my first inhale at -40 degrees in January, laying in the prone position for significant lengths of time next to my Recon platoon mates camouflaged in overwhites, gazing on the aurora borealis for the first time, purchasing my first DSLR and capturing some of the most pristine wilderness in the world, being introduced to military mountaineering in the Delta Range, snowboarding through perfect powder in the Chugach Range, and spending nearly four years with the US Army in The Last Frontier. These moments are forever etched into my memory and I am grateful the Lord above sent me to this place to help me grow into the man I am today.

We’ve chased the Northern Lights across Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. And after seeing the aurora in all these places, Fairbanks, Alaska is still our favorite place in the world to see the Northern Lights. 🌌

Why Fairbanks? It’s located beneath the auroral oval, has relatively dry interior Alaska weather, and offers some incredible places to stay where you can watch the Northern Lights right from your accommodations.

No driving around on icy roads at 2 AM or booking an aurora tour for the night. That’s how we like to chase the Northern Lights.
