This morning I joined Fredricka Newton, community leaders, and the incredible students of Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary in West Oakland to serve free breakfast in honor of the Black Panther Party’s 60th anniversary.

In January 1969, the Party started the Free Breakfast for School Children Program right here in Oakland to fight childhood hunger and support education and health. Back then, I was a student at Mills College raising my two young sons and volunteering at the Party’s Community Learning Center. That experience taught me what public service really means. You show up, you listen, and you do the work.

To our MLK Jr. elementary students: this rich history belongs to you. You are Oakland's future.

Thank you Principal Dr. Groves, Councilmember Carroll Fife, Superintendent Denise Saddler, Pastor Zach Carey, Muralist Refa one, our Oakland firefighters, and Kai XR for supporting today's free breakfast. And to our Black Panther Party elders: happy 60th anniversary. Thank you for showing us what people can do when they come together to love their community.

Building @ExploreKaiXR has been a labor of love. ❤️

My teachers took a huge chance on me, and everything I do is to pay it forward.

With teachers, we do it all for our students. It’s my greatest hope that students using Kai XR know their ideas are valid, and they will lead the way making their own companies that will change the world.

The future is bright. ✨

🚨 Meet Camelback Fellowship — Cohort 16.

These 20 founders are building bold, impactful solutions across education, health, technology, food systems, and justice reform.

From Boston to Los Angeles, Houston to North Carolina, this cohort reflects Camelback’s deepened commitment to investing in under-resourced founders — including a $50,000 investment per Fellow — because when brilliance is resourced, communities thrive.
