Top Albums 2024 - Honorable Mentions, aka albums 23-31. It’s meant to be a top 30 list but 31 fits better 👌

- And So I Watch You From Afar (North IR) - Megafauna. Aug. 9, 43 min. Beautiful, energetic, upbeat instrumental post/mathrock. Takes me back to my mathrock phase around 2010 and reminds me of bands like Tera Melos. Loved seeing it in its entirety at Pelagic Fest! Favs. North coast Megafauna, Mother Belfast

- Mother‘s Cake (Austria) - Ultrabliss. Oct. 18, 54 min. Upbeat psychrock with tons of classic rock references, extended jams and good vibes throughout. Check out Cyberfunk! Favs. Clockwork, Love Me

- Blood incantation (US) - Absolute Elsewhere. Oct. 4, 44 min. The most visionary album on this list! Tasteful mix of death metal, floydian classic prog, and electronic soundscapes. I’m not much of a death metal fan but this is absolutely intriguing! An adventure from start to finish. Fav. The Message

- Frost* (UK) - Life in the Wires. Oct. 18, 85 min. Nice positive prog rock with some odd time signatures and emotive choruses. Plenty of time for high-energy and calm sections. Favs. Life in the Wires pt. 1 & 2, Idiot Box

- External (FIN) - Dreamscapes. Jan. 19, 53 min. Vola/Voyager sound with some unusual instrumentation and some darker bits. Vocals give 80s darkwave vibes w unique harmonies and some growls. Tip of @inthedream_11 Favs. Sudden Waves, Ghost House

- Dvne (Scot) - Voidkind. Apr. 19, 58 min. Starts out straightforward but more prog structures come with Eleonora and grows into a postmetal adventure. Reminds a bit of Psychonaut and Black Peaks. Favs. Abode of the Perfect Soul, Pleroma

- Gardenhead (FIN) - Gardenhead. Jan. 18, 41 min. Grungy prog with influences from Tool to Karnivool. Multiple vocal layers make nice harmonies! Favs. Sanctuary, Black Hills

- Solum (SE) - Avlägsenheten (the remoteness). Dec. 6, 43 min. Instrumental prog explorations from Christian Fredriksson, the guitarist of Vulkan. Check the review from @1progressivemetalfan! Fav. Grand Enigmatic Wall

- Oh Hiroshima (SE) - All Things Shining. Jun. 28, 44 min. I enjoyed this album as soon as it came out but really fell in love with their music at Pelagic Fest! Fav. Deluge

Listening stats October 24 - Loads of new music and bands from Euroblast!

Revisited the whole discography of Kyros, The Hirsch Effekt, and Vola.

Really dug into the new albums by Kyros, Better Lovers, OU, Rezn, Yomi Ship, Dvne, Homecoming, Mother's Cake, Final Coil, Gardenhead, and External as well as quite a few others just after the end of this list like
Rabea Massaad, Zeal and Ardor, Cobra the Impaler, Dool, My Diligence, Eefje de Visser, Kalandra, The Chronicles of Father Robin, Madder Mortem, Skraeckoedlan, Lizzard, Devin Townsend, Imminence, Teramaze, Kingcrow, and District Five
- so much great new music this year!!

The stats in Tidal were quite off this month - Most notably Kyros is considered two different artists...
—- Update: I wrote Tidal support about this and they fixed it immediately!! Literally within a couple hours of writing. I think I’m going to make a list of misplaced albums and bands 👌

Listening stats September 2024
Everything here can and should be taken as a recommendation! I love every musician on this list 😍

Despite a huge void in the statistics on Tidal and despite having to miss their Evening with Haken Tour which looked amazing, I really enjoyed reviewing Haken‘s discography and saw Fauna in a new light.

Kalandra on the other hand I did get to see live, on the first night of their first headliner tour and I was blown away by the ambiance and the beauty of the music live! I had many more calm phases this month and really fell in love with The Line all over again while also getting into A Frame of Mind which came out two days after the show ☺️ we got to preview some new music!

Tigran Hamasyan has recaptured my admiration with his new album The Bird of a Thousand Voices which I listened through quite a few times this month as well as older material which is all👌

Immanuel Wilkins is rising quickly and I found out about his show just a couple days before and bought a ticket the morning of! Did a lot of listening in retrospect especially.

Euroblast is right around the corner and I didn’t know most of the bands on the lineup this year! So I gave them all a listen and especially enjoyed Tylion, Vertex, Kyros, Kolari, and Walzwerk plus Caligula’s Horse and Vower who I already know pretty well. Right off this list there’s a handful more.

New albums from Pure Reason Revolution, Leprous, and Eefje de Viesser, External (Jan. ‘24 - thanks @inthedream_11 for the great tip) and Kyros (Feb. ‘24) got a few spins each too! 👌

After meeting up with @kristofdujardin at Pelagic Fest I gave another listen to Mankind‘s debut album Last of Us which came out one year ago on Sep 29th 2023 and ended up coming back to it over and over throughout the month! 😍 It’s packed full of expressivity and passion and deserves a lot more attention!

Wheel and BTBAM are among my favorite bands and never get old ❤️
