My 34th year has been an adventure like no other. I’ve become a father to an amazing boy who continues to make me proud everyday. I couldn’t have had a better parenthood partner than Tanesha. πŸ“Έ: @eyeofniles To Our Community: Since the summer of 2020, we have come together each year to commemorate Juneteenth in Queens. Nearly half a decade later, our gathering has blossomed from a powerful march demanding the abolition of the carceral system that punishes Black lives into a vibrant jubilee of civic empowerment, artistic expression, and a celebration of transforming our experiences into live action at Roy Wilkins Park. Every year, we say these words, and every year, they hold true: We couldn’t have come this far without you. As the warmth of summer returns, a sense of anticipation stirs in the air. Across the world and within our own borders, battles for self-determination and liberation rage on. Our civil rights are under siege, Black maternal health is being undermined, and an ever-expanding surveillance state looms over us. These threats remind us that our fight for Black liberation is both under attack and within our grasp. May this be our rallying cry, a powerful reminder that we hold the strength to resist and reclaim our freedom. At the heart of our jubilee lies community, and as we renew our unwavering commitment to our liberation each Juneteenth in Queens, we strive to make it more than a one-day celebration. This is a testament to our defiance, a call to dismantle the structures of oppression and envision a future beyond our warmest imaginations. Community stands above all, and we learn this truth from every single one of you. From our dedicated vendors, to our talented performers, staff, sponsors and most of all to our beloved constituents, you each teach us the power of unity and the strength of togetherness. When I was three, my parents β€” immigrants from Haiti β€” moved our family to Long Island for its promise of safe neighborhoods and a high-quality education. Growing up on Long Island, I loved riding bikes, playing kickball, catching fireflies, and chasing down the β€œMr. Softee” ice cream truck with my wrinkled dollar bill in hand. As a student attending Long Island public schools, I earned academic and good citizenship awards β€” and I probably would’ve won more if they gave out awards for being β€œtoo talkative in class.” By the age of 11, I had joined the Student Council and visited the New York State Capitol in Albany. I will never forget taking our group pictures on the staircase inside The People’s House. I would revisit the New York State Capitol twenty years later β€” this time as a Legislative Chief of Staff, husband, and father. Today, it is with great honor, pride, and humility that I announce my decision to run for the New York State Senate to represent Long Island’s 6th District in Albany. The 6th Senate District includes the communities of Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor, Carle Place, Freeport, Garden City, Hempstead, Lakeview, Mineola, New Cassel, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, Uniondale, Westbury, and West Hempstead. For more than a decade of my career, I have worked hard to serve my community and make a positive impact in New York as a tenant organizer, mental health advocate, civic leader, and legislative policy advisor.
