What is a sound system?

In Jamaica, the sound system has been called the 'talking Gleaner' because of its community function and a modern day drum that brings people together. Ronnie Jarrett has built some of Jamaica's most respected sounds and his own set, called 8 Mile, has brought people together from Alexandria, St Ann to Dubai to feel the vibes.

Ronnie breaks it down from a technical point of view....

"A sound system is what you have built. It’s really high powered amplifiers and high powered speakers, in large speaker cabinets. It's huge. It’s heavy. It's expensive. And that is what you call a sound system in a Jamaican context. Big power amplifiers, huge speaker boxes with high powered speakers installed in them."

Music Monday 🎶 - Congrats to Buju Banton on the Grammy reggae album nomination for "Upside Down". This album features Alpha music instructor, Okiel Mcintyre, on trumpet. @jah_kiels

"Working on the album was quite an experience. This first song I played on was done by the late Bobby Digital's studio with Verlando Small on 'Helping Hand' and that time it was not too long after he [Buju] returned to Jamaica. It was also a spectacular moment to witness him behind the microphone with a certain level expertise and emotion that helps to reflect the feeling of each song. All in all, it was a great experience connecting with era before my time and for that I'm absolutely grateful," said Mcintyre.
