Continuing our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to highlight Pre-Professional Trainee Program faculty member Yinet Fernández @f.yinet and the experience she brings into the studios at Joffrey Ballet School.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Yinet began her training at the Provincial School of the Arts and National School of Ballet before going on to perform professionally with companies in Cuba and the United States. Her career includes an extensive classical repertoire alongside works by celebrated contemporary choreographers, shaping a perspective that connects strong ballet foundations with versatility and artistry.

Yinet brought that experience into ballet class with our Jazz & Contemporary Trainee concentration students, challenging dancers to strengthen their classical technique while continuing to develop the adaptability that supports their training across disciplines.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the backgrounds and experiences of faculty like Yinet who contribute to the many perspectives within our Joffrey Ballet School community and inspire our dancers every day.

✨ #ThrowbackThursday ✨
We never got around to sharing these sweet moments from our Summit Spring Showcase in June—and they’re too good to keep to ourselves. 💙

From first-time performers to seasoned students, our dancers filled the stage with confidence, creativity, and joy. We loved celebrating everything they accomplished throughout the semester, and we’re looking forward to welcoming these dancers back—along with many new faces—into the studio this Fall!

NEW this Fall in Summit:
✨ Dance With Me for ages 2-3
✨ Tap II/IIA (with limited spots available!)
Plus exciting performance opportunities, including:
🩰 Don Quixote excerpts staged by School Co-Director and former American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Sarah Lane for our Fall Concert on November 7.
Registration is open now, and our Open House is August 29! Come meet our faculty, tour the studios, and find the perfect class for your dancer.

No two classes with Yinet Fernandez are the same—and that’s the point.

Her approach to teaching starts with you: what can be refined, what can be pushed, what will challenge your brain in new ways. Rooted in classical technique but always responsive to the dancers in the room, her classes build strength, musicality, and confidence week by week.

When asked why adults should study ballet, Yinet puts it simply:

“Ballet is very good for the mind… when you have challenging combinations, your brain is really thinking… It’s also very good for the heart, for the legs—it’s a whole body workout. The way that we train, it is like a sport.” @f.yinet

Because ballet isn’t just repetition—it’s growth.

Jersey City: Start your weekend off right! Int/Adv Ballet with Yinet Fernandez | 10 - 11:30 am at the Nimbus Arts Center. To study with Yinet is to stand at the intersection of two of the world’s great ballet traditions — the precise, music-driven artistry of the Cuban school and the bold, contemporary vision of Dance Theater of Harlem. Her class is technically exacting and genuinely inspiring, the kind of training that deepens your understanding of ballet not just as a technique but as a living art form. Wherever you are in your dance journey, Yinet will ask more of you — and you will be grateful for it!

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Arthur Mitchell was on his way to Brazil to start a ballet company when he heard the news of Dr. King’s death and turned his taxi around to Harlem. Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fifty-six years later, that dream continues.

Inspired by Dr. King’s call for equity, Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook founded Dance Theatre of Harlem to create space, opportunity, and excellence in ballet. His dream lives in every step forward. Today, we keep moving in the spirit of Dr. King.
