They say a flower is ornament. I wore mine as a statement, and as a small nod to Oscar de la Renta, who spent a lifetime in love with flowers.🌺
This week at @thepierreny , during the 81st UN General Assembly, Fashion 4 Development gathered first ladies, founders, philanthropists and changemakers for its 14th First Ladies Luncheon, alongside a tribute to his house, one that has long dressed diplomacy.
The room was in full bloom. And nothing about it was frivolous.
Among those honoured was the late Ted Turner, remembered by his partner, Sally Ranney. He was a sailor who lost races before he won the America’s Cup, and she shared how he lived by two rules:
✨ “I wasn’t losing. I was learning how to win.”
✨ “Wasting time is a cardinal sin.

Once the party had died down and the room had emptied, I found a few quiet minutes with Sally. We spoke of entrepreneurship and risk. What the world mistook for Ted’s impulsive leaps, she told me, never were. He was a conservative maverick, with every risk calculated and every leap considered.

But the lesson I carried home was quieter still. Across every remarkable person in that room, the common thread was not ambition. It was kindness. The most accomplished were also the most generous with their time, their counsel and their attention. I no longer believe that is a coincidence. It may be the whole secret.
So yes, it was a flower. But I left thinking less about what we wear and more about how we treat each other.
All that glitters, it turns out, was a goldmine.
With gratitude to Evie Evangelou, Dame Amanda Schumacher and Fashion 4 Development.

Love, S.
