The Story Behind This Tattoo

I’ve been thinking about this design for years.

For five of them, I had The Net of Being—Alex Grey’s version for Tool’s 10,000 Days—as my wallpaper.

(Yeah… I’m that Tool fan.)

—

It all started in the early 2000s. I was 16 or 17, a nu-metal kid during the genre’s golden era. But I still remember the first time I heard @toolmusic .

The Parabol/Parabola video came on TV—and I was mesmerized.

From the first second, it was like being transported through other dimensions.
The visuals. The art. The intention behind everything.
All while the music surged through me like pure energy.

“Pain is an illusion” echoed in my head for years.

—

That was it. I dove headfirst down the rabbit hole.
I needed to know who made this music.
Who created this art?

I discovered Maynard’s quiet intensity.
Danny Carey’s godlike drumming.
Justin Chancellor and Adam Jones’ hypnotic rhythm and riff work.

And then I found the visionary behind the visuals: Alex Grey.
His art still reveals new meaning every time I look.

—

10,000 Days and Lateralus are my favorite Tool albums. They marked me at a formative time.

For me, The Net of Being (and the album itself) symbolizes transformation.

It’s about going through something:
🖤 Losing a loved one
🖤 Surviving burnout in a dead-end job
🖤 Being undervalued, used, drained
🖤 And having the strength to step away, heal, and rebuild

It’s about unlearning trauma. Breaking patterns.
Becoming someone new—someone real.

—

Just like Wings for Marie Pt. 1 & 2, it’s about grief, transcendence, love, and growth.

The music and imagery didn’t just go through something.
They went through me.
Through every version of me.

What came out on the other side?
Transformation and Acceptance.

—

This tattoo is a reminder:
🌱 Life is growth.
We’re here to learn, evolve, and become—again and again—for as long as we’re alive.
