#Spring2026Rewind 🔁| Congratulations to two recent SJGC graduates Kaylin Jean-Louis and Naji Rutherford, who were both recognized at the 2025 Florida News Awards in the general assignment reporting category for college television! 🧡🐍

Jean-Louis took home the win, while Rutherford earned finalist honors. Being named a finalist out of more than 700 entries submitted by broadcast journalists across the state is a real accomplishment, and both students represented SJGC at the highest level. Both packages were produced for FAMU-TV 20/SJGCMedia.com and scored by professional journalists from across the country.

Jean-Louis’s winning package explored how new DEI policies were affecting students at Florida State University. Rutherford’s work captured the community impact of a robbery at a local Salvation Army. Both students credited Professors William Jiles and Kenneth Jones for shaping them into the journalists they are today. 🌟

I KEPT THE RECEIPT!!

I said last year that I’d return to FABJ and walk away with a win. I did it not once but twice🏆🏆. These wins for Producer and Team Coverage, and Finalist for Evening Newscast are the product of 4+ years of long days and longer nights since moving to Florida. From college in Orlando @danpatrickedu - to doing social media videography, all leading to the last 3 years at Gulf Coast News. Saying thank you to all the people who’ve helped me doesn’t do it justice. My amazing team at work and all the teachers and mentors before have helped build me into the Producer I am today. I couldn’t do any of this without my family and God. Getting to celebrate with my mom and sister meant the world to me.

Thank you FABJ for these amazing honors.
More big news coming soon 🎙️🫡

A little late but it’s never too late to celebrate 🤍

I’m incredibly grateful to share that I received a FABJ Award in the Education category for a series of stories I worked on last year as part of our education campaign. This project was very close to my heart. It focused on helping Hispanic students navigate a system that can feel overwhelming, because I’ve lived it. I remember being 17, trying to understand how to build a future and pursue journalism.

Through these stories, we highlighted different paths like technical careers including welding, electricity, and HVAC, as well as options like becoming a physician assistant and resources like the Bright Futures Scholarship. Information that can truly open doors.

Being one of the few Spanish-speaking journalists in that room meant everything to me. Representing our community and seeing Spanish-language journalism recognized reminded me that God places us exactly where we need to be. Our stories matter. Our voices matter.

I’m also so thankful to have been selected as a finalist for our holiday special, Explora y Ahorra. That experience brought me so much joy, showing families across Central Florida ways to celebrate the season with love and intention. 🤍

More than anything, I know every opportunity, every story, and every step in this journey has been guided by God. Awards are a blessing, but my true purpose is to serve others through storytelling. To inform, uplift, and be a light for my community.✨

Thank you God for exceeding my dreams in ways I could have never imagined. Thank you to my mom, my biggest blessing and supporter, my boyfriend, and everyone who has been part of this journey. And to my angels in heaven, I feel your presence in every step I take 🤍

I’m honored to share that I received my first Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists award for my story, “The Dreamer’s Dilemma and the Uncertainty of DACA.” This piece would not have been possible without my source, Maria, whose trust made it happen. I’m incredibly grateful. There is still widespread misinformation about the path to citizenship, and I hope this piece helps clarify at least one part of that conversation. Thank you to everyone who supported this work.
