Festival of AAPI Books in Long Beach, CA

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I am embarrassingly late posting these pics from my fabulous time at the Festival of AAPI Books in Long Beach this July @fablongbeach I was honored to speak on the Adult Authors panel with amazing @mononoke97 @jasminiolani @devislaskar! Our moderator @docbeevee asked us such deep and thought provoking questions, I hope the attendees appreciated our discussion as much as I did. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate AAPI books and authors!

✨️ FAB Long Beach 📚🎤

About a month ago, I had the honor of being invited to moderate the romance panel at the Festival of AAPI Books (FAB) in Long Beach. Seriously, what a blast it was getting to discuss the experiences these authors have had as storytellers, and getting to just share our love and appreciation for, well, love.

Thank you to authors Julie Tieu, Joss Richard, Kaye Rockwell, and Emery Lee for the wonderful and insightful conversation full of laughs and memories, and to Bel Canto for hosting a fabulous (pun intended) festival as always 🫶

Also, I told myself I wouldn't buy any books during this event, but clearly I failed. These books were just too good to pass up on, and at least I got to get them signed by authors Ellie Yang Camp and Devi S. Laskar while there 🤭

QOTD 💭: What's your favorite way to stay cool during a hot summer?

LET’S KISS AND TELL 🌟💋 is out in the world!!

Last month I had the pleasure of chatting with @joss.richard about her second book, which just hit shelves this week, and it has been THE read of the summer!! (And as a journalist, I can say I’m totally not biased at all and this story is just amazing — seriously, it has all the elements of a classic rom-com and Joss’ bold humor and wit made this story a real page-turner)

Let’s Kiss and Tell is a dual POV rom-com that follows two journalists who agree to fake date for personal and professional reasons — perfectly captures the vibes of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Sex in the City!! You can grab your copy in stores this week.

Also, stay tuned for the rest of my convo with Joss 🎤

A special thank you to @fablongbeach for hosting this interview 💞 (and the wonderful @readgracefullee for letting me borrow these stellar mini mics!!)

I had ONE five star read this month…which one do you think it was??? Not to say the other books weren’t excellent, this was definitely a good reading month! I love that book events like @fablongbeach inspire me to read new-to-me authors in genres I usually don’t reach for on my own. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

From colorful crafts to meaningful conversations, the Festival of Asian Books was a day to remember. 📚✨

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the TeachAAPI Kids’ Craft Corner to decorate paper fans, share wishes on our Tanabata Wishing Tree, and celebrate the joy of culture, creativity, and storytelling with us.

We loved seeing so many families come together to learn, create, and connect. Until next time! 💛

💗📚 Festival of AAPI Books (FAB) 2026 Recap! 📚💗

We are beyond thankful for everyone who helped make this year’s @fablongbeach such a wonderful celebration of AANHPI joy, community, and solidarity!

By the numbers, we:
- hosted 24 authors, illustrators, and publishing professionals
- organized 4 author panels, 6 Storytime readings, a clay art workshop, a children’s craft corner, and our first ever Book Lover’s Journaling meetup during the Opening Reception
- showcased 14 small businesses and nonprofits at our Vendor Market
- raised $500 for future literary festivals ($225 in raffle ticket sales + $225 in @belcantobooks matching funds)
- welcomed more than 300ppl to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library

All this was accomplished with the care and dedication of our amazing volunteer team, the behind the scenes support of @portoflongbeach @friendsoflbpl @lbplfoundation, and the generous help of @lbcitylibrary staff! Special thanks to @nannette_rica40_photos for all the amazing event photos!

Thank you again to all who helped plan and setup, shared their creativity and expertise, and attended FAB 2026!

Keep an eye out for dates for @liwanaglitfest in 2027, and we’ll see you back at FAB in 2028!

“Kind of a late @fablongbeach recap because my car broke down but here it is!

I attended the publishing, YA, and adult round tables at @fablongbeach last week and have already posted videos from the YA and publishing ones. Given how long my video of the adult round table was, I thought a written recap may be better suited for Instagram.

During the adult round table, @docbeevee asked the authors about the timeliness of their books, what inspired them, and how colonialism/race impacted their books. For @devislaskar, who spent years working as a reporter, the shift from more fact based to more opinion based journalism troubled her and her novel, Midnight at the War, takes stock of this moment in which it’s hard to tell what is and is not real. @jasminiolani jumped off of that to share how oral stories and family histories helps her fill in the gaps in what’s recorded in the news and archives in order to write her novels, while @mononoke97 shared that the timeliness of her books has to do with how certain issues, such as patriarchy and racism, never truly get resolved.

Hua and @eeewhysee both talked about how the impetus for their books was partly the racial reckoning that came with quarantine and COVID. Yang Camp wanted to write a book that could serve as a foundation and provide the language to people, such as her friends and family, to discuss their racial experiences. While writing Louder Than the Lies, she wanted to speak to the reader in a way that was helpful and understanding without being condescending.” — Audrey Fong, co-editor

@cblee_cblee and @aimeephanwrites share how the publishing industry has changed regarding AAPI stories and how earlier AAPI artists helped pave the way for today’s AAPI writers during @fablongbeach’s YA Round Table on July 11, 2026
