Took a midweek foray up to the main Warehouse and may have helped myself to a little too much.... Stupid amounts of upholstery, fashion, and new quilting all heading to Virginia - definitely thanks as well in part to the wonderful warehouse team up north who I may have left with a bit of a packing mess to catch my return flight.

The Details

The stays are modified from a pattern by @redthreaded and are made of coutil and synthetic whalebone from @farthingales

The bloomers are made of remnants from and lace from @peoveeco and quilting cotton from @fabricplacebasement

The sleeves are also quilting cotton. Do not attempt to make these of quilting cotton. Heed my mistakes. My machine has only just forgiven me for my sins.

The hennin is made of Fosshape 3000.

And of course the makeup, styling, and modeling are by the incomparable @soulsalvvve / @mx._tom_foolery

The Process

I first messaged @mx._tom_foolery about collaborating on an outfit two years ago this month. I knew, honestly from the moment I met them, that they were (and continue to be) the exact kind of creative that I needed to work with on some level.

It was a long time in the making, but I couldn’t be happier with how this look turned out.

Sav gave me a kind of creative freedom and trust that was almost overwhelming—I wanted so badly for everything to be perfect, and it was tricky to let go of the fear of creating something that wasn’t up to snuff, and to trust myself. Imposter syndrome really is a nasty sucker. I still checked in regularly about the details, but this was such an experiment in play.

Experimenting was the name of the game throughout this entire process. While the general shape of the outfit is exactly my kind of project — bloomers and stays are truly my bread and butter — it was the details that were new to me: quilting/patchwork, exposed boning channels, and millinery were all completely new to me, and while I definitely have a way to go, it was a phenomenal excuse to explore more facets of the wonderful world of fiber arts.

Ultimately, after 8 different mockups, an unreasonable number of trips to @fabricplacebasement for various 1/4 yard cuts of quilting cotton, and 4 needles sacrificed to the making of the double hennin, I was able to ship off an ensemble that felt so joyous and celebratory and queer. It makes my heart sing just to look at it.

A million thank yous to Sav for allowing me to create something so silly and fun and beautiful.

Pixels can't capture this quilt's brilliance... but you can — the raffle winner gets to bring this quilt home with a matching bag and pouch! 50% of raffle proceeds will go to Project Bread, feeding families all over Massachusetts. Such a fun afternoon at the Regency Garden Party event at Barrett House last weekend. It was a fun learning experience making regency stays to accompany the regency gowns I made for my coworkers. Went to @fabricplacebasement to source some fabrics about a week ago and was able to make this Corporate, but not corporate. Casual, but still put together. Comfortable, but never lazy!!!! #UMS
