October kicks off with a true horror from a writer who I am in constant awe of with each read of her work. Set in Central Florida during the Jim Crow era already makes this an awful nightmare, but Robbie’s horrors truly begin when he is sentenced to a notorious boy’s correctional “school” on trumped up charges. Tales of ghosts and hauntings at the school are nothing compared to the daily terror under the evil superintendent’s cruelty. The only chance for survival is a harrowing escape attempt but can Robbie trust the ghosts leading the way? I honestly could NOT put this book down and I was riveted until the very end.

HORN has a cover!

My short stories always followed my inspirations & obsessions of the moment. For HORN, I was obsessed with the notion that though the unicorn is a ubiquitous pop culture figure, this majestic, mysterious creature has in recent times been distilled into a caricature of childish tropes, rainbows and sparkles. . . but I was a grownup (sometimes), and I loved unicorns too.

Why not? Wild but not feral, beastly yet beautiful (a unicorn is basically just a beautiful monster), and one of the sexiest denizens of any bestiary. I imagined him as he might be in our modern day, one of us—at least part of the time. I imagined him having problems anyone might: getting by at work, trying to make sense of the world, creating his art. Falling in love.

Of course Nick (in HORN) has problems the rest of us wouldn't, but some might sound familiar. He struggles to connect with others. When he meets Dani, he doesn't know how to let his defenses down, and fears the consequences of showing her his true self. He doesn't know how to navigate his emotions. He doesn't want to spend a life without love, alone.

It was an amazing ride giving ye olde unicorn mythology a moody, slowburn grownup glow-up, writing an off-kilter romantic adventure fable set in modern times. Entitled gamer bros! Venture vulture CEOs with nefarious secret hobbies! A frustrated fairytale-loving QA tester with too much eyeliner and a rebel edge to her dayjob wardrobe! All tinted by the mythological subsurface rippling through their world.

It’s FINALLY here!!!
