The first time KUKII heard mahraganat in Cairo, it was “world shattering”. She had arrived in the city in 2016 as Lafawndah, and despite feeling worlds apart from the men making the music, recognised something familiar in its intensity: voices that misbehaved, rhythms that didn’t need to be softened and a sound unconcerned with being pretty. Nearly a decade later, that encounter runs through “Rare Baby”. When she nervously played the music to mahraganat pioneer Sadat, his response mattered more than any outside validation: “You did it. This is the future of the thing. You moved it forward.” Proving that for KUKII, mahraganat was never just an aesthetic, Egypt was never an overnight identity claim and Cairo was never just a backdrop. “I am a popstar. I’m just not the kind of popstar that’s waiting to enter a system or waiting to be told she is one.” After nearly a decade of acclaimed, genre-dismantling music as Lafawndah, Iranian-Egyptian artist Yasmine Dubois left the name behind for KUKII: an alias closer to herself, shaped by a growing connection to Cairo and partly named after an aunt she had spent years trying to find. @yasminehamdan and I met over ten years ago …on top of being such a talented multifaceted musician, she embodied everything I loved about arab women : strength, integrity, freedom, humour, feminity, courage, generosity, i could go on and sound like a groupie… It took a while to make this dream of a collaboration happen but there couldn’t be a better home for it than @dazedmena 🤍 thank you @joannawzorek for your passionate take on it and @ahmadaswaid for making it happen

A force of nature, the one and only @yasminehamdan 🌹 graces the cover of our summer issue, aptly titled Deliverance. Here, writer @fadynageeb captures a brilliant portrait of the legendary Lebanese singer-songwriter whose music remains the soundtrack for all of us who refuse. Committed to lingering in the unknown and commanding her own path. The ultimate takeaway, remains a maxim we should all aspire to live by: “People would ask, ‘What are your plans?’ It made them anxious when I’d reply, ‘Nothing.’”.
