On Saturday, April 18, 7-11 AM US PST, join me, @fahmidangroup, and wonderful creatives from the US, Iraq, Nigeria, and Palestine to explore food stories.

The foods that make us. The tastes that break us. The dishes that put us back together.

Let's explore our kitchens and street food stalls and vegetable markets and ___________.

Let's write our worlds.

In times that feel increasingly out of control, times in which many of us feel powerless & insignificant in the face of human and natural disasters, sharing own own stories — listening to others' — can help us find some degree of agency.

And maybe, just maybe, by reframing how we engage with our own stories, we can find ways to (re)connect with narratives that feel far beyond our reach.

Hope to see you at a gathering soon.

My former students can be very kind (thanks, abhishek) but no magic would be possible without you — every single participant — and what you bring to these gatherings.

In times that are overflowing with loss and grief, coming together with creativity, with a desire to make changes in ourselves, in the worlds around us... well, we all need that magic.

"But I'm not a writer," people often tell me when I invite them to join a gathering.

You don't need to be "a writer" to engage with storytelling as a way to learn, process, reflect, evolve.

All you need to be is you.

If putting words on paper isn't your thing, we'll find another way for you to do your writing. Maybe you'll write with your voice. Or your hands. Or your feet. Or your stomach.

Show up. Engage. Tell me how you like to use words.

My job — my joy — is to help you take it from there.

People often talk about storytelling — writing, theatre, music — like it's a luxury. Food, clothing, shelter are survival needs, they say. The arts are extra.

And sure, on some level, they're right. Those things keep our physical bodies alive. But we are more than our physical bodies, no?

For the hunger that food doesn't satiate, for the cold that clothing can't warm, for the homesickness that we feel even when we're home, we often need something more.

To me, storytelling isn't what we turn to once our needs are met. Listening to others' stories, sharing our own... it's often how we figure out what we need at all.

"You need to write it like this for it to be a good story."

I've rarely found generalized rules for crafting "good stories" to be useful.

There are all kinds of stories.
All kinds of "good" stories.
The challenge lies in finding what your unique version of a good story is.

These upcoming gatherings aren't about telling you there's one right way to craft stories. They're about inspiring you to figure out what YOUR way is.

In the words of the powerful @roxanegay74: "Stories have given me a place in which to lose myself. They have allowed me to remember. They have allowed me to forget. They have allowed me to imagine different endings and better possible worlds."

Join us at an upcoming gathering and see what storytelling can do for you. Link in bio.

@thisismimie: thank you for your kind words about our collaborations!
