📱 Fairphone 5 — A Fairer Approach to Technology

Launched in 2023 by Dutch company Fairphone, the Fairphone 5 is a smartphone designed to make electronics production more responsible. Its supply chain includes Fairtrade gold, recycled materials, and initiatives to improve workers’ conditions.

Three risks of unfair production:
• Unfair or unstable wages for miners and factory workers.
• Unsafe working conditions and risks of labor exploitation.
• Environmental damage from mining and electronic waste.

Three benefits of choosing fairer products:
• Better support for miners and their communities.
• Investment in improved working conditions.
• Less waste through recycled materials and repairable design.

To me, Fair Trade means treating workers fairly and respecting the people behind what we buy. It matters because technology should not come at the expense of human dignity or the planet.

Fairbuds 2 - Wireless earbuds designed around repairability and longevity. 👂

Building on the original Fairbuds, Fairphone’s second-generation wireless earbuds introduce a smaller, lighter design while retaining a fully modular construction. Seven user-replaceable components, including the batteries in both earbuds and the charging case, allow individual parts to be repaired or replaced without discarding the entire product. The earbuds are 37% smaller, with a charging case reduced by 32%, while a new 11mm bio-cellulose driver, hybrid active noise cancellation and up to 40 hours of total playback improve everyday performance. Made using approximately 49% fair and recycled materials, including PFAS-free plastics and silicone. 🔉

Before you buy new headphones, watch this.

Most wireless earbuds have their batteries glued in. When the battery fades, you can’t replace it, so the whole pair goes in the bin.

Now multiply that by every device we own. In 2022 the world threw away a record 62 million tonnes of electronics. That’s enough to fill 1.55 million trucks, lined up bumper to bumper around the equator. Less than a quarter of it was properly recycled. And India is now the third-largest e-waste generator on the planet.

It doesn’t have to be that way. A few brands are actively making tech you can keep instead of replace:

@houseofmarley : Bamboo, FSC-certified wood, recycled aluminium, and fabric spun from recycled materials.

@marshall Major V: 86% recycled plastic, replaceable ear cushions, and over 100 hours of playtime.

@fairphone Fairbuds XL: You can swap out the battery and ear cushions yourself. Fix the part, keep the pair.

@aiaiai.audio TMA-2: Fully modular. The headband, earpads, cable and speakers are all separate, so you replace only what wears out.

@gomidesign : A speaker handmade in Brighton from waste plastic and batteries rescued from old e-bikes, with lifetime repairs.

‘Aha, dus wij helpen het milieu!’ ⚡

Het besef van de impact die de leerlingen tijdens de E-waste Race maakten, werd treffend verwoord door een leerling tijdens de race in Amersfoort.
De leerlingen gingen vier weken lang fanatiek aan de slag met het inzamelen van oude elektronica. En ze ontdekten hoeveel je samen kunt bijdragen door apparaten een goede bestemming te geven en waardevolle grondstoffen terug te brengen in de keten.

Samen met @fairphone organiseerden we E-waste Races in Amersfoort en Ede. En de leerlingen gingen er vol voor!

In @gemeenteamersfoort won groep 8 van De Kubus. Met bolderkarren en kruiwagens vol elektronica kregen ze bijna de hele wijk mee. Ze maakten zelfs een Instagramaccount om nog meer apparaten op te halen. De race maakte de klas hechter en zorgde voor een flinke dosis trots.

Ook in @gemeenteede bleef het spannend tot de laatste minuut. Groep 8 van de Veldhuizerschool ging er uiteindelijk met de winst vandoor. Wethouder Arnold Versteeg was onder de indruk van de opbrengst. Maar ook van wat de leerlingen hadden onthouden over grondstoffen in elektronische apparaten.

Dit is waar we samen met Fairphone voor gaan: kinderen laten ervaren dat oude elektronica waardevolle grondstoffen bevat en dat hun eigen bijdrage ertoe doet. Niet alleen de klas, maar ook de hele buurt.

📱 What if your next smartphone was designed to be repaired, not replaced?

Every year, millions of smartphones are discarded, often because of a broken screen, a worn-out battery, or outdated software. But one Dutch company believes the entire industry needs a rethink.

🇳🇱 Meet Fairphone, an Amsterdam-based smartphone company challenging the throwaway culture of modern technology.

Unlike conventional smartphones, Fairphone devices are designed around modularity and repairability. Crack your screen? Replace it. Battery wearing out? Swap it. Rather than buying an entirely new device, users can replace individual components and extend their phone’s lifespan.

But Fairphone’s ambitions go beyond repairability.

The company is also working to reduce electronic waste, increase the use of recycled and responsibly sourced materials, and improve working conditions throughout the electronics supply chain. Its Fairphone (Gen. 6) even promises eight years of software support.

💡 Here’s where things get interesting.

The smartphone industry has built much of its business around convincing consumers to upgrade regularly. Fairphone is challenging that model by selling devices designed to stay in use for years.

And that raises a fascinating business question: Can a smartphone company succeed by encouraging customers to buy fewer phones?
