💐💐💐for HIA! Stopping for the grid on the gram is rare these days, a sign of life full to bursting. BUT this calls for a pause and for APPLAUSE, as our beloved Hiawatha Collins gets honored for his many many years of tireless work tonight with the Joe Bostic and Jose Capestany VOCAL for Compassion Award at the @vocalnewyork Gala at Roulette! This human being is so exceptional, so fierce and loving, and a real PREACHER for the people. Can’t wait to see what he seeds in this second year of his ministry in our @faithinharmreduction cohort this year! 👏👏👏 #HarmReduction #Advocacy #Liberation

Behind every substance is a story. And this is Samantha’s. 🌿

Many people know Samantha Ainembabazi as an artist, curator, journalist and community leader. But titles rarely tell us the whole story of a person.

In this deeply personal reflection, Samantha speaks in Runyankole about her own journey with substance use the parts of ourselves that can remain unseen even while the world sees our work, achievements and strength.

Her story reminds us why this campaign exists.

People who navigate substance use are not one thing. We are artists. Leaders. Friends. Creators. Survivors. People navigating complicated lives, just like everyone else.

We are more than our substance use.

Thank you, Samantha, for trusting us with this part of your story and for choosing to tell it in your own language, in your own voice. ❤️

Behind Every Substance Is a Story.

Listen before you judge. Ask before you assume. Support without taking away someone’s dignity.

No two stories are the same.

Substance use does not tell you everything about a person what they have lived through, what they love, what they are surviving, what they dream about, or who they are beyond the labels.

That is why this campaign begins with listening.

Behind every substance is a story.

What if we listened before we judged?

Something important is coming from Nange. 🌿

Too often, when we talk about people who use drugs, we begin with the substance and forget the person.

We forget the survivor.
The sex worker.
The friend.
The parent.
The artist.
The dreamer.
The person trying to survive.

At Nange, we want to change that conversation.

Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing voices from people with lived experience, challenging some of the myths surrounding drug use and harm reduction, and creating space for stories that are too often silenced by stigma.

Some will show their faces. Some will share their voices anonymously. But every person will tell their story on their own terms.

This is more than a campaign about substances.

It is about people.

BEHIND EVERY SUBSTANCE IS A STORY.

And we are ready to listen.

There is something powerful about being in a room where you can speak and know that you will be heard. ❤️

Nange Healing and Harm Reduction Centre, together with #ANNA Foundation, brought together trans and gender diverse community members, including trans sex workers, trans people who use and inject drugs, and survivors of violence, for an open and confidential conversation about the realities affecting our lives.

We talked about safety, GBV and violence, HIV prevention, healthcare, access to justice and community support.

We talked ,listened ,laughed, reflected and shared difficult experiences, but we also shared knowledge, ideas and hope.

And as we share these moments on Sex Worker Pride, we especially celebrate the trans sex workers who are part of our communities and whose voices, experiences and leadership matter in conversations about safety, health and justice. ❤️

Sex workers should not only be invited into conversations when we are discussing HIV or violence. They are leaders, friends, organisers, caregivers, dreamers and experts in their own lives.

This dialogue reminded us that safety is more than being protected from violence. Safety is being able to seek healthcare without discrimination. To ask for help without judgement. To seek justice without fear. And to exist with dignity.

Thank you to everyone who trusted the space and shared a piece of themselves with us, and to ANNA Foundation for creating this space alongside us.

Today, on Sex Worker Pride, we celebrate sex workers not only for surviving, but for speaking, leading, caring, organising and imagining something better with us. 🫶🏾

Happy Sex Worker Pride. ❤️

A difficult day does not erase your progress.

Change is not always a straight line. Someone returning to substance use does not suddenly become undeserving of care, respect or support.

At Nange, we believe people should be met where they are without shame, punishment or having their dignity taken away.

Instead of asking, “Why did you fail again?”
What if we asked, “What happened, and what support do you need right now?”

💬 What is one myth about substance use or recovery that you think we need to stop repeating?

“Behind every substance is a story.”

For International Overdose Awareness Day, our Coordinator, @aggiedennettharmon , shares her story in partnership with @peningtonnews .

Aggie is an overdose survivor. After surviving sexual assault, she carried more pain than she knew how to live with, and substance use became a way of escaping a reality she couldn’t face. She survived an overdose because someone chose to save her life and because harm reduction and community gave her another chance.

That experience is part of why she began Nange.

Nange is rooted in the belief that people are more than the substances they use. Behind every substance is a story of survival, fear, trauma, pain, and sometimes simply trying to make it through another day.Behind every overdose is a person someone’s family member, friend husband or relative

Aggie is alive because someone did not give up on her.

Now, she refuses to give up on others.

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those we have lost, stand with those who are still here, and continue to choose compassion over stigma and life over judgment.

Let’s choose to keep people alive. 💜
