Today my album “Every Little Fire” is released into the world. I sometimes think about how the role of the artist is to light a torch which is then thrown into the collective void that it may illuminate the surroundings briefly and provide some hope, light and direction to those who witness it, before it is eventually swallowed by the great nothingness. One torch by itself only providing so much light but collectively the illumination is powerful. And so here I stand about to release this torch from my grip, that it may be taken by the natural forces, that it may lessen the shadows, that it may twinkle in the eyes of those who have come to watch the cascade of all these little fires.

This album is an outward expression of all the life I’ve lived over the last 5-6 years, and so spans Covid, babies, old houses, new houses, international moves, new lives, loss, grief, love, fatigue. It’s sat in the background patiently watching me as I ran around like a madman, an actually insane person, trying to get some purchase on his own life. It waited until, in my not knowing what do to do next, I would pick up a guitar, or notepad or sit at the keyboard. It was in no rush to finish itself. It helped me find and remember the joy in making, the child-like satisfaction in a creative process (and not the product). It helped me remember that I have something to say.

Thank you as always for your love and support of this project, and for reminding me of your love and support when I often forget it, and for the messages of how the music has helped you in some way, being a soundtrack to your joys and griefs. This music is yours now x

Today is the day. Fade to Violet is out on streaming platforms and available for purchase on Bandcamp. First track will make you go “whoa”. 🎷For Your Consideration • Baby Rhino 🦏 Best Children’s Music Album (listening link in bio)

The album’s title has a fun backstory. Over the years, kids have occasionally misheard my name as “Baby Rhino,” and the nickname always made me smile. It eventually felt too good not to become an album, and now I’m happy to officially embrace my newest alter ego. 😂

I challenged myself to reconnect with my youngest audience, tapping back into the energy and wonder of those early years when my own kids were little. I wanted to create a sound with swagger and a rock ’n’ roll drive — like Baby Rhino started its own rock band!

The result is an eight-song collection full of imagination, playful storytelling, and irresistible grooves. From spotting a “Helicopter! Helicopter!” overhead to navigating childhood’s little mishaps in “Uh-Oh,” many of these songs grew from everyday moments and conversations with kids and families.

And then there’s “The Friendliest Dinosaur,” a playful reimagining of the mighty T. Rex. Inspired by recent research suggesting these dinosaurs may have been far more social than once believed, I thought, after 22 million years, it might be time to set the record straight: perhaps this misunderstood giant wasn’t such a bully after all — maybe it just wanted to be your BFF! 🦖💚

‘Baby Rhino’ features the mighty Little Band That Could — Larry Eagle on drums, Jeremy Chatzky on bass, Seth Farber on keyboards, and Liz Queler on mandolin and vocals — along with some very special guests: Gene Casey and Matt Beck on electric guitars, and Bill Holloman blowing the horns. The album was produced and engineered by Ken Rich at Grand Street Recording and mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound, with whimsical artwork by Susie Hammer.
