“This residency took place in early April 2026. We arrived at the house in the evening. Despite its size and salmon-coloured walls, you could almost miss it. It stands among many other impressive homes on an otherwise inconspicuous street.

Only the next morning did we fully appreciate its scale — its multiple verandas, generous patios, and sweeping sea view. Within minutes, we found ourselves online, checking real estate prices, caught in what we came to recognize as the primary symptom of the highly infectious ‘let’s just move to Madeira and work from home’ virus. It settled under our skin the moment we stepped outside and took our first ten-minute walk towards the sea, only to wear off on the steep climb back — the kind that makes you start noticing the locals’ calves.”

Our head writer, under her artistic pseudonym @sousomafalda chronicles her experience at @escola_normal in Funchal, Madeira.

Had 2 Ilford 400 B&W rolls stationed for almost 2 years.

This encapsules the magic of analog photography for me. I forget what I shot and then remember right away the memory attached.

Little 36 memory time capsules.
Thank you to @pauloabreu_fotografia for developing these 🙌
