Whether you are new here, or have been here for a while... you might have realised that these are some of the books I love talking about the most!

Mistborn, Wheel of time, First Law, Bloodsworn, shadow of the leviathan, kaiju, Blacktongue, Sun Eater and Alien Clay are the Crème de la Crème of fantasy in my opinion. (And of course DCC, duhh)

Everything about these series is perfect. I LOVE them, and would recommend all of these to everyone who is interested in reading fantasy.

Boy's Life by Robert McCammon
Suntup Editions Numbered Edition

This is the first of two Robert McCammon projects that Suntup has recently done productions of and this turned out just perfect (I'm even more excited about the two volume version of Swan Song that should be delivered in the next six months as well). Boy's Life is a wonderful coming of age tale and a beloved work of American fiction. It's a great fall read and a wonderful window into the magic of childhood for those of us lucky enough to have had the freedom to be children. I have two young boys now and it brings me back my childhood and growing up in a smaller town in the Midwest. This is Robert McCammon at his best and not a bad starting point with his work if you haven't read anything by him.

Specs:

The Numbered edition of 250 copies is a quarter goatskin binding with a custom pattern design by Laura Serra printed on linen cloth covering the boards and a foil blocked leather label. The spine is Pentland Goatskin from J. Hewit & Sons. Endsheets are Hahnemühle Bugra and the head & tail bands are handmade with leather. The book is housed in a cloth covered clamshell enclosure with velour lined floors and a foil blocked leather spine label. A fold-out of the Classic edition endsheet & dust jacket illustration is included. The edition is printed letterpress on Mohawk Superfine and is signed by the author and artist David Palumbo @dvpalumbo who needs no introduction. The dust jacket from the standard edition is absolutely gorgeous!

Now I am just salivating to get Swan Song in my hands as the production looks like top-tier Suntup.

Have I said that I'm excited about No Country for Old Men coming this week? 😂

Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi

Let me just start by saying that unequivocally, this is my favorite book I have received in 2025 so far. Federico, Antonio and Davide did something incredible here with their first book and it reminds me of presses like Suntup Editions, Curious King and Conversation Tree Press who just nailed it right out of the gate. It is very rare for the first release of a press to be this good. To be fair, the guys at Morning Bell Editions are not new to the industry, they have been in bookbinding and selling for a very long time, but this is their first entry with this imprint and going out on their own.

Everything about this production was masterfully thought out and executed. The two-tone leather binding is gorgeous, the top edge one of my favorite I have ever seen, the typography and interior layout spot on for the story and these guys know how to do presentation when it comes to the entire experience of receiving a fine press book.

On top of all that, the illustrations by Luca Zamoc @lucazamoc are perfect. Often times when seeing illustrations in a fine press book, I wonder what it would look like to have different illustrators, but I can't imagine this book with anything but his work. It fit the tone and overall production and was brilliantly executed. The whimsical but dark tones in these illustrations represent the story as it was intended.

This book is a thoroughly Italian production, even using Fabriano Tiepolo paper (the same we use for our broadsides) and it's refreshing to see a press that is firmly cemented in a specific place and culture that seeps through every aspect of production. This book is clearly an intense labor of love and I am extremely excited to see what comes next from them. These guys have made a customer for life, can't wait to see what comes next!

July Reads

Well fellow crawlers, I finally did it, dove into the insane journey that is Dungeon Crawler Carl. I really didn't know if this series was going to work for me, but I'm totally invested now. Everything people have said is true, I have laughed out loud more in this series than almost anything I have ever read, but have also teared up more than once. Is it juvenile at times? Absolutely. But at the same time the world building is original, the characters memorable, and Matt manages to sneak moments of pure heart in when you least expect it and it hits you all the harder for the contrast. I'm in for the ride folks and currently reading Butcher's Masquerade, slowing down my pace a little bit though as I don't want it to end too quickly. Also, I have downloaded the audio books for these novels as well and for the first time in my life (outside of maybe Steven Pacey's delivery of the First Law Universe) I'm finding myself drawn to the audio over the physical books, the performance is captivating. Jeff Hays is a force to be reckoned with!

I also started my journey in the Bound and the Broken. I only have the first two books so I am taking a break after The Fall until my full set from Broken Binding comes in. Of Blood and Fire was a solid start, but to me didn't feel like I was discovering anything new. Definitely was getting Faithful and The Fallen vibes (sometimes to a heavy degree) but it did still draw me along. Then, I read the little novella "The Fall" and was instantly hooked. It might be one of the best novellas I've read. It was packed full of world building, intense action, and revelations that got me completely invested in the series. While The Fall takes place before Of Blood and Fire, I still think it should be read after it, because it is all the more powerful once you have the context from Of Blood and Fire. Excited to get the rest of the set and keep reading!

Shogun by James Clavell

This may be one of the books that has sat on my TBR shelf the longest. As someone who studied history in my undergrad, I'm not sure why this has never made it to the top, but I'm confident with this beautiful version it will hit it this year!

Broken Binding really has their pulse on the market and what books people are looking for special editions of as Shogun (and the subsequent books) have been on so many people's want lists that it seemed like a no brainer for someone to do this, thankful that Matt over at Broken Binding is paying attention. Now if only we could get Lonesome Dove....

I love that books like this are getting the care and attention they deserve and hope that Broken Binding keeps expanding out beyond traditional fantasy and sci-fi so we can keep getting editions like these!

Weird. Volume 1 Deluxe

Are you a fan of Weird fiction?

As someone who is relatively new to the Weird fiction genre (although I have read quite a few of the "New Weird" authors) this collection is coming at the perfect time for me. Though there are many small presses that have paved the way in this genre like Tartarus, Egaeus, Sarob, Side Real, Mount Abraxas, Pegana and two of my favorites, Zagava and Centipede Press, to my knowledge there has never been a set like this before (letterpress printed, handbound, hand-marbled paper, 20 volumes) where Weird Fiction has been given the full fine press treatment in such a comprehensive way. Ramsey Cambell's Cold Print & others is the second volume and just went on sale last month. If you are wanting to start exploring Weird Fiction and love well made small/fine press books then this is the place to start!

This edition is packed with so much extra goodness including a new intro from S.T. Joshi and 29 full-color paintings and 12 pen-and-ink illustrations by Dave McKean @davemckeanhourglass one of my favorite illustrators. At under 300 pages this book is lushly illustrated with imagery to accompany every story plus some!

As always, Tony brought an all-star team together for this one with Phil Abel at the help for the letterpress printing @handandeye.london, the team at Ludlow for the binding @ludlowbookbinders and Freya for the gorgeous marbling @paperwilds. The usual thoroughness and thoughtfulness that Tony brings to the interiors and typography are obviously here as well. I can't imagine years from now what this 20 volume set is going to look like on the shelf. As I dive more into Weird Fiction, particularly the older works, I am glad to have CTP and S.T. Joshi guiding me and having it delivered in such a beautiful package.

Let's get weird!
