if you’re looking for a different side to uk hiphop, dc3 is that 🇬🇧

the uk rapper has strong roots in faith and christianity and that really comes through in his track “kunta in uk.” referencing the character “kunta kinte” from the book “roots: the saga of an american family,” dc3 tells the emotional stories and struggles of growing up as a black man in the uk

with features and samples from the likes of kendrick lamar, jid, stormzy, little simz, and central cee, this track is emotional and has notes of inspiration from childish gambino’s “this is america”

we heard in the sample of “alright” on “kunta in uk” that dc3 likes to reference kendrick lamar on his tracks. he does so again with his song “the bigger picture.” this track samples the instrumental from “we cry together” to create that ominous environment that the original track created

the track is a part of a short that dc3 dropped on youtube exploring similar themes of fighting with and mistreating women that kendrick did in “we cry together”

it’s clear that kendrick has made a great impace on dc3 as an artist and that really shows in his live performances as well. earlier this year, he performed live for the bbc in what was a really cool showing for the uk underground

the energy that he brings is really reminiscent of kendrick and when that “we gon’ be alright” sample hits you can tell that dc3 was just waiting for that moment. to see dc3 perform live with an entire live band was a huge accomplishment for uk’s rap scene

what do y’all think? are you tapped in with christian rap music? how did you like the multitude of artists featured on “kunta in uk?” lmk below love y’all <3

🎤🎻 Two young Huddersfield artists. One orchestra. Two original tracks.

JHS Driss and KelzGoneWest wrote their tracks with our music leader and producer FarangDan, then performed them with the Musica Youth Strings at Huddersfield Town Hall. It was part of a West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Partnership project.

JHS Driss told the Huddersfield Examiner: "It opened up a career path for me." Kelz said music "has been like therapy" and helped keep him out of trouble.

Watch both performances and hear from JHS Driss on our website (link in bio). The Huddersfield Hub has covered it too, so look out for their article.

Thanks to the Huddersfield Hub and the Examiner for covering it.
