🌿 Workshop Recap: Tradition and transition: Hempcrete and Rope with Freia Achenbach @freia_achenbach and Hannah Segerkrantz @hannahsegerkrantz

From mixing hempcrete to experimenting with fibre techniques, we explored hemp’s full potential as a sustainable, regenerative material for building and design. Participants got hands-on with casting, knotting, braiding, and rethinking the way we construct and connect—materially and conceptually.

How can collected knowledge and materials be transformed into circular practices? At the end of the project period, the Living Library invites everyone to an evening of intertwined conversations, artistic inputs, and performative gestures. From impulse talks on afterlife and urban gardening to sound performances, a bioregional dinner picnic, and a compost ritual: join us and toast the end and the new beginning! We will conclude by celebrating the official launch of the publication—accompanied by drinks and DJs.

Interactive Map

The interactive maps on the Digital Living Library let you discover where raw materials can be found in and around Karlsruhe. They also show relevant companies and public institutions for students to grow their network. Some maps show exact spots, others visualise broader areas where you might encounter materials. 🪵Growth to Joinery: Rethinking wood as living material 🌲

We just wrapped up a powerful two-day deep dive into sustainable joinery with guest experts Simon Gehring @simon.gehring and Stefan Kudermann @zentrum_holzbau_schwarzwald Together, we explored how wood can be more than a structural material—it's a living, responsive partner in design.

🚌 Day 1 Highlights
Our field trip led us deep into the Black Forest, tracing the full lifecycle of timber—from forest roots to refined joinery. Students followed the journey of wood through a veneer factory, a carpentry workshop, and an ecological timber construction site. The experience sparked meaningful reflection on how the origin and transformation of materials shape our design thinking.

Special thanks to our collaborators:
🌲 Forest Tour – Bühler Forst Tour
🏭 Veneer Factory – Furnierwerk Bühl
🏫 Wood Education Centre – Komzet Bau Bühl
🏗️ Timber Construction – Jülg Ökologischer Holzbau
🪚 Carpentry Workshop – Schreinerei Arthur Seiler

Stay tuned for Day 2 insights and the results of our hands-on workshop.

🪵Growth to Joinery: Rethinking wood as living material 🌲

We’ve just concluded an inspiring two-day exploration of sustainable joinery with guest experts Simon Gehring @simon.gehring and Stefan Kudermann @zentrum_holzbau_schwarzwald —rethinking wood not just as a building block, but as a living, creative partner in design.

💬 Colloquium & Workshop – Day 2
Back at HfG Karlsruhe, we opened the day with a public colloquium—an open forum for dialogue on sustainability, material intelligence, and more-than-human design perspectives.

🛠️ The afternoon brought us into the workshop:
Participants engaged in hands-on experiments—testing friction-based joints, examining wood fibres under the microscope, and exploring both traditional and digital joinery techniques. Through this material-driven inquiry, we questioned conventional construction methods and tuned into wood’s intrinsic logic.

This workshop was an invitation to slow down, observe deeply, and shift from extraction to collaboration—imagining a future of intelligent, waste-free design. A dialogue between material, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

🌳💡 Huge thanks to all who joined us in reimagining how we build—and why.

I'm thrilled to present 'snapshot', a series of film interviews that reflect a momentary snapshot in the life of Lacuna Lab and its members. These interviews take a record of the artworks presented by the members during Vorspiel along with their individual backgrounds, influences, and points of view.

I will be releasing the interview during the period of the festival prior to each artist's act.

In the midst of the global pandemic caused by covid-19, Transmediale celebrates the Vorspiel 2021, and due to the lockdown conditions, Lacuna Lab proposes an entirely digital program.
