In 1977, three surfers from Santa Barbara, California, travelled south in search of uncrowded waves. Their intended destination was Peru, but an unexpected border crossing took them into northern Chile.

Stoked to welcome GRINGO DIARIES — EL DIARIO DE EL GRINGO, directed by Chilean filmmaker Rodrigo Farías Moreno, to the official selection of the Suomifornia Film Festival. @fariasmoreno

Near Arica, the three surfers discovered a powerful and previously unsurfed wave. They camped beside it, surfed it for several weeks and kept its location secret when they returned home.

The only public record of their visit was a small number of newspaper photographs in which their names were incorrectly written. With no reliable way to identify them, their story gradually became part of local surf mythology.

Thirty years later, the wave—now known as El Gringo—received international attention when Arica hosted a world surfing championship in 2007. The identities of the surfers who first rode it, however, remained unknown.

Director Rodrigo Farías began investigating the story and launched a campaign to find them. With help from social media, all three were located in 2019—42 years after their original journey.

Using interviews and archive material, GRINGO DIARIES reconstructs their story while examining the importance of El Gringo to Arica, the development of the local surf community and the city’s emergence as Chile’s first Surf City.

Welcome to Suomifornia.

Last weekend, in Colina and Talagante in Chile, 500 volunteers joined @parleychile and @bancodechile for two days of river cleanups, and we intercepted over 5 tons of waste.

This figure speaks volumes about the amount of trash accumulating in our rivers and what a committed community can achieve in just one morning. Parley’s partnership with Banco de Chile demonstrates that when a company is truly committed, the impact is multiplied. Since 2023, we have visited 21 locations together, mobilized over 2,000 volunteers, and removed more than 27 tons of waste from Chile’s beaches, rivers, and wetlands.

This year, we are focusing on rivers because the ocean begins long before the coastline; much of the trash that reaches the sea travels first through our watersheds. Yet, the most valuable result is not the tonnage, but the people. Every volunteer who removes waste from a natural area returns home seeing their surroundings differently, and that shift in habits is what truly protects our ecosystems.

Thank you to everyone who came and volunteered in these events. Community is at the forefront of change, and where we begin to see how our efforts truly matter. Happy #worldriversday to the veins of our life support system.🫀🌊🇨🇱

🌊 LIMPIEZA N.º 10 | VOLVIMOS AL MISMO LUGAR, PERO ESTA VEZ ENCONTRAMOS MUCHO MENOS

Seguimos recorriendo, limpiando y observando nuestra costa.
