H-H-H-H-H-H House Nation … a continuing series …
😎💜⚡️🔊
Jesse’s Gang with Farley “Funkin” Keith – Real Love – Jes Say Records 1985

… celebrating 40 years since house music first began its journey to these shores.

There were lots of Chicago house records reviewed in September 1986 (sorry, not quite up to October’s reviews yet) by James Hamilton in his Record Mirror column, with this getting a review even though it hailed from the previous year, as it being reissued by Geffen Records after Jesse Saunders had signed a deal with them. I counted 9 releases in total that can definitely be called ‘house’, although one of them, Marshall Jefferson’s “The House Music Anthem” was getting its 2nd review after being licensed from Trax to Affair for a UK release.

Here’s a list of them as I haven’t posted about all of them:

Adonis – We’re Rocking Down The House – Trax Records
Bang Orchestra – Sample That – Geffen
Jerry McAllister – Never Let You Down – DJ International
Jesse’s Gang ft. Ronnie – Spies – Jes Say
Liz Torres ft. Kenny Jammin’ Jason – What You Make Me Feel – Underground
Marshall Jefferson – The House Music Anthem – UK Affair
Midnight Sunrise – On The House – Uk Crossover
Virgo – R U Hot Enough – Trax

In fact, I only still own Adonis, Virgo, Marshall Jefferson (on Trax), and this one. And the Midnight Sunrise is actually by Ian Levine, never slow to catch on to a new trend in dance music was he.

This is a bit mad, and features Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, before he’s ripped off his friend Steve “Silk” Hurley’s idea of a name change. He joins Jesse Saunders and Vince Lawrence or Jesse’s Gang, for what amounts to a quite pop style stab at copying Jamie Principles “Your Love”, with the same synth arpeggio repeated throughout, some Prince and James Brown samples, and bizarrely, some scratching!

It really is a bit of an odd record, which is probably why I still like it. James Hamilton wrote, “… chugging and wriggling 122 ‘house’ eventually reaching catchy vocals and butch chants, with some scratching …”.

Must be the “butch chants” I like. Can never have too many!

Part 4, we're looking at the track I finished my set at @cabal.wax's first birthday with, and this one is properly special!

The original 'I Want It To Be Real' by @john.rocca.muzik first came out in 1984. By 1987, as house music was still emerging, @farleyjackmasterfunk had put his spin on it in @arthurhbaker's NYC studio, putting forward 'Farley's Hot House Piano Mix'. This exercise in piano-forward house was the version I played when handing over to @warehouse.find because it's such a perfect moment track to go out with and establishes the party squarely past the warm up as the night starts to pick up.

Also on this cut is @latenitetuffguy's interpretation, which is on the A-side, first out on this record on South Street in 2022. Big up @underground.solution in Edinburgh, where I picked this one up the other week 🙏

for someone like me who discovered his love for electronic music whilst still attending primary school this compilation album holds quite a few essential and highly influential cuts which defo left a mark at the very early stages of my formative years.

this goes especially for 'time to jack' and 'like this' by @iamchip_e_ which never lost their grip on me.
