Farming is serious business, but that doesn’t mean we have to be serious all the time. Especially in these times that attempt to rob us of joy, it’s important to get together and experience goodness.

A little glimpse into the evening social at the @scblackfarmers (South Carolina Black Farmers Coalition Conference).

Beyond the sessions, presentations, and conversations about the future of agriculture, there’s something special about simply enjoying each other’s company.

Because community isn’t just built through the work we do together. It’s also built through the joy we share.

❓️QUESTION:

WHAT do you do when 1 bag of regular groceries ON SALE costs over $100?

WHAT do you do when you have to skip the entire produce section in the grocery store because you can't trust that the food won't make your family sick?

👉🏾ANSWER:

Grow stuff.

AND, talk your neighbor who has more land into partnering to grow more stuff and start a joint chicken coop next spring. 🙏🏾🤞🏾

🍉I'm keeping hope alive for my watermelon plant.
I FINALLY had the budget for materials and energy to build the trellis. Yep, in September.

Okra is doing her thing. Wish I had more than one plant.

🍅Tomatoes abound.
I'm about to try canning for the first time... at least in my mind.

🥒🥒Cucumbers are showing out.

🍓Little strawberries keep popping out.

Got a few beans on 2 plants now.

I'm going to braid my chives and freeze them. Saw it on Instagram.

My sweet potato slips are growing inside.

My lavendar revived and mint, too when I moved them out of full sun.

🥬Hope to start my lettuce and spinach seedlings today or tomorrow. Yep, in September.

There's NOTHING like eating greens from your own garden. The flavor was so intense I had to season them twice.

🍽Everything tastes SO good and intense compared to store bought.

💦Oh, yeah. I'm DETERMINED to get that water barrel set up by the end of the week. I even want to figure out how to connect a second one.

🐛And, HOW DO Y'ALL KEEP THISE CRITTERS OFF YOUR COLLARDS?

❓️❓️📣SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME!

🐌No, the slug snail thingy was not in the garden. My daughter rescued it from behind the house. ☺️

🍉Y'ALL SEE MY BABY WALLAMELLAH?!?!?!?

🐛And, the little moocher critters I FINALLY caught in the act of devouring my collards?!?!?
They will NOT take food out of my family's mouths.

I need to be more diligent about checking the leaves and spraying them with mint water at night.

I'm so glad I didn't give up on either of those plants.
They just took their own time.
💡A life lesson from the garden.

My instapot will be on duty tonight!
Just gotta' make some cornbread to go with my greens.
🍽YUM.

✂️Pruning is a regular thing to focus the plant's energy for greater growth.
And, sometimes leaves and plants just die despite my best efforts.
💡Yep, that's another life lesson from the garden.

🤷🏾‍♀️Still don't have my water barrel hooked up.
I'm workin' on it... in my mind, at least.😉😆

Need to get some bubble wrap from the dollar+++ store so I can try SEED SNAILS for the first time for my fall crop seedlings.

Yep, later than I hoped to start then.
And, still NOT late for my life.

Gathering my courage to cut my downspout and attach it to my rain barrel.
Not sure why I've been hesitant to do it especially since it will lower my water bill.
Maybe it's because it's something I haven't done before...

SO many life lessons taught and learned in the bliss and peace of a garden.

Every gardener learns to appreciate a quiet dry cloudy morning with mild summer temperatures like today.

I got up this morning determined to conquer the "pests" in my garden.

Today's pests include a random tree-like thing that has become a home for lantern flies and is keeping the sun off of one of my raised beds with tomatoes and peppers, AND a thorny bush that is coming from my neighbor's yard that I don't even like to touch because it pricks me every time. But, it's tangling itself up in my berry bushes so it has to go.

WHY ARE THESE PESKY THINGS THE FASTEST GROWING THINGS IN MY GARDEN?

Anyway...

So, I got my gloves and tools and headed outside.

UGH! I was SO disappointed to see that my corn has failed. Period.

Corn is my favorite vegetable, so this was not a happy moment. I thought about the cost of the seedlings and soil and all the water I poured into growing corn.

But, then I decided to look and see what was going RIGHT in my garden, including...
* my collard greens have survived
* my many tomato plants are getting me ready for my first attempt at canning
* I even have my first cucumber!
* three types of mint are thriving
* marigolds abound
* lemon and avocado tree plants are growing nicely
* blueberry and raspberry bushes are still alive and I'm expecting fruit next spring
* my lemon grass is tall and strong and
* I harvested my first string bean!
* along with a bunch of yummy, sweet tomato snacks.
* and, I am encouraged to start my fall crop seedlings inside - NO, it's not too late.

I shifted my focus.

I cut down the pesky plants.

I enjoyed the beauty and quiet time.

I moved my body in a natural easy way that makes me feel stronger and connected to my ancestors and the earth.

I have healthy home-grown food for my family to enjoy.

I also did a thing I had been thinking about and planning for weeks which is to trellis the random but beautiful green vine that somehow ended up in one of my raised beds.

I did it!

🌽Corn, I'll see you next year.😉

STRAWBERRIES in AUGUST in MARYLAND?!?!? Get outta' here!
Tomatoes abound.
Needed another coat of spray paint on my secondhand outdoor chairs. Secondhand is the BEST hand to spend with!
Cut some more lemon balm to give lil' miss okra more daylight and she's doin' her thang.
Gotta' figure out how to trellis the watermelon and cucumbers.
Decided I'm making an archway with the crazy pretty vine.
Corn isn't thriving so I moved it for more sun but divine intervention is definitely on order from above.
Went in my shed for some wire cutters and wasps flew out. Absolutely not.
And, YES! I am FINALLY getting my WATER BARREL set up...well, at least for measurements for cutting the downspout.
No, not late. Yes, I paid for water I could have had from a barrel with all that May, June and July rain.
But for real, I truthfully could not.
My timing is my timing and God's timing.
My garden and pre-farming/homestead experience is blissfully unbothered and unhurried and divine.

Grow stuff, fam.
That's all.

Hmmm... time to prepare for fall crops...

Squash plant was leaning.
Tried to straighten it.
Broke the pot.
Saved the pieces to create drainage in future pots.
Switched the pot with my mint plant.
Strawberries got the nerve to be growing.
Blueberry plant has blossoms. Took 3 years.
Moved my raspberry plant for more sun.
Little avocado and lemon trees stay in tomato plant pots for now.
Tomatoes abound! Yum.
Weeds growing tall as cover for my storage area.
How did that crazy vine get in my raised bed?... But I kinda' like it.
Cucumber vine got tangled up with watermelon vine.
Collards WILL survive. Sprayed them with mint water this week.
Redistributed the marigolds for color and pest control... and color.🙂
Ran from a few lantern flies infesting some tall plant in the far corner that I won't touch. Nope.
Harvested lemon grass which hopefully gives my little okra plant more sunlight. Never should have planted them next to each other.
Still haven't found someone to cut my downspout to catch rain water in one of the 3 rain barrels I got through Freecycle. Working on it...
