A perfect example of the early 2000s in Morocco — a time when local artists were taking global hits and giving them a new life through local energy, language, and performance.

With “Goulo Hey”, Jalal El Hamdaoui created a Moroccan reinterpretation inspired by the worldwide success of Las Ketchup’s The Ketchup Song (Aserejé), one of the biggest international pop phenomena of the cassette and CD era. The original song became a global hit in 2002 and itself played with references to old-school rap culture.

But “Goulo Hey” wasn’t only a copy it reflects that moment where Moroccan popular music adapted international trends into something local, festive, and familiar. Same collective energy, but with a Moroccan atmosphere and audience.⁩
