POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Almost twenty years! December 2006 Tommy Hankinson, Electrics best boy on ‘All Saints’ Channel 7’s long running medical drama and shooting at Concord Hospital in Sydney.
Then last week we found ourselves back shooting at the hospital once again. Never let a chance go by even though there was no 6k case to sit on. 20 years on and Tommy is one of Sydney’s most in demand gaffers and a joy to be on set with. Love my job!

Twelve months ago I released volume one of ‘Observations on Set 1983-2005’. The idea for the book went back before I can remember but came into being in 2020 as we all had time on our hands during the Covid lockdowns. At the beginning of 2024 I set myself a goal of having it published by the end of that year. I’m doing the same with volume two, ‘Observations on set 2005-2025’ it’s an extra 100 pages and 200 more images than volume one. I’m currently 3/4 of the way thru grading and resizing the imagery, next will be sending out the many permission forms and then finally off to the printer. So still lots to do, and all done between jobs. I’ve learned so much from book one, book two looks more polished with a cleaner design but still clearly the second part of a two book set, same dimensions same typefaces etc. Once completed the set will cover over 40 years of our history and will include mothers and daughters, fathers and sons as the new generation arrived on set. As well as those of you who are of my generation just keep going. There are a number of copies available of volume one still. Don’t be the one to buy volume two and miss out on the set. It’s all our history thru the end of shooting on film and the rise of digital, of the COVID years and beyond. So many CH CH CH CHANGES.
Volume one available at https://observationsonset.com get a copy for yourself or as a gift. Cheers JP

Keep the Xmas feels going into the new year and go see ‘The Deb’ in a cinema near you mid January.

As our beloved sound dept friends often state when defending their existence “Nobody ever exited a cinema whistling a two shot”

The dancing and songs are worth the price of admission alone.

A joy to work on and congratulations to all involved.
Thank you to Rebel, Natalie, Charlotte and all the cast for the access. Cinematographer Ross Emery, Gaffer Tommy Hankinson, Key Grip Martin Fargher and the crew for putting up with my requests for help.

@thedebfilm was by far one of the best gigs I’ve had the pleasure to work on. @rebelwilson was an absolute G directing this dancing, singing, comedy! The cast and crew were just the bees knees!

Ten years ago, in 2015 ‘Mad Max Fury Road’ was released. Five years prior to that I photographed all but the largest of the vehicles, the Tanker and Doof wagon were just to large to get into the available space. Three weeks shooting 75 cars trucks and bikes, what a job. Richard Mason was my Gaffer and along with Chris Follett, Paul Johnstone, Beau Moulson and AD Scott Lovelock we had free rein on how we wanted to shoot these pieces of art. As many of you would know, Richard passed away only a few weeks ago. There has been a gofundme account set up by Tommy Hankinson to benefit Richard’s family while they negotiate this very difficult time. The goal has almost been reached so if you can, please help out and get it to that final mark. Link the page in my bio. Cheers J

Chris Follett and Tommy Hankinson the T and C of TRC Lighting. I wanted to place them next to the R of TRC, Richard Mason. Tom and Chris each spoke beautifully about Richard last Saturday. Their relationship with him as individuals and as partners in the company. Please don’t forget the GoFundMe appeal for Rich’s family. If you can help out please do, a link to the page is in my bio.

It’s not easy to encapsulate how incredible Richard was to me. A towering giant that never made me feel small, forthright, without belittling, truthful without ever making it painful, he taught me how to be a better AD that stuck, purely because of how he could deliver the lesson. His intention was that he wouldn’t settle for anything less than what’s fair and the best, not only for himself and his TRC familia but everyone else on the production too. Thank you for the wisdom and belief that I could run a set one day, I’ll look up and tell you when I make it. Im blessed to have danced with you so much over the years but I guess I’ll have to let the angels be your back up dancers now.
