Nope, this still hasn’t registered in my brain, and I’m not sure it ever will?! 😭

*The* Sarah MacLean read Favors from a Gentleman and discussed it on @fatedmatespod last week!!! To say I’m honored is an understatement. (And to be likened to Mary Balogh? I won’t be recovering anytime soon.)

Thank you endlessly, Sarah and Jen, for continuing to give your love and support to historical romance! And if you haven’t listened to the episode yet, go do that now. Wonderful titles from @janehadleywrites, @anneknightbooks, @logan.sage.adams, @felicitynivenauthor and more are featured and deserve a place on your bookshelf! 💜

Marian Keyes and the Politics of Commercial Fiction
by Maria Butler

Marian Keyes is one of Ireland’s most important fiction authors but is often not celebrated as such. Keyes’ novels draw on the author’s trademark charm, wit, and pathos, yet her girly packaging and light-hearted marketing resulted in far too little critical attention and celebration compared to her literary contemporaries.

Focusing on her depiction of three significant Irish loci of shame: addiction, depression, and abortion, Maria Butler draws upon Keyes’ novels, essays, interviews, and online posts to demonstrate how her writings serve as a counterpoint to culturally prevalent, stigmatising depictions of people coping with addiction and mental illness. This groundbreaking study seeks to challenge the existing narrative on Keyes and opens a window to her extraordinary writings for future readers.

I was listening to an old @fatedmatespod on @authorcatecwells Run Posy Run, trying to figure out why I liked it so much, and @sarahmaclean said she’s gotten to the point where if he comes first and he doesn’t go down, it’s an automatic DNF. And, yep. Pretty much.

However also, I have some thoughts about WHY 80s and 90s romance had all these consentless situations. I think there were good reasons at the time. Like, sex-positive *for that era.* I couldn’t fit all that into this edit, so I’m gonna do that one next. #vampireromance #amwriting #90sromance #80sromance
