I love a new sketchbook! I finally finished this study page of Vachellia nilotica (Acacia nilotica) which is also known as the Gum Arabic tree. Before you get too excited, the Gum Arabic that we use for watercolour paints comes from a different tree, Senegalia senegal, which produces a higher quality of golden sap.

But I really love this tree. Not only does it smell divine, but it was full of buzzing bees and insects, and visited regularly by colourful bee eaters. I really want to not like the bee eaters for snacking on my favourite insects, but they are just too pretty and too charismatic (sorry bees).

This is an interesting tree - the seedpods were traditionally used for tanning leather, and also as a medicine (skin infections and gastrointestinal conditions).
I searched for green pods but couldn’t find any, so assume that this must be a second flowering as there were masses of flowers and masses of dry pods.

The word Acacia comes from the Greek word for thorn, and this tree certainly has impressive thorns!!
Anyway, I have enough information to create a painting. I really want to explore the flora and fauna of the UAE when I return!
Thank you @fatma.rashed.art for the sketchbook!
