On January 24, the Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron Kabinett, Basel hosted ‘Unbuilt Matter’ as part of the current S AM exhibition ‘What If – Unbuilt Architecture in Switzerland’.

I had the great chance to moderate a roundtable discussion with Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou and Jaques Herzog.

The talk explored how the category of the unbuilt applies to architecture and unfolded its spectrum of possibilities, starting from two texts proposed by the speakers.

With the storyboard ‘Life / Supersurface, an alternative model of life on Earth’, Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou offered an insight into the work of Superstudio. The unbuilt is here the premise for radical speculation, where an a priori design strategy informs the entirety of inhabitable space, stretching and dissolving the boundaries of the discipline toward different forms of project.

With the text ‘Eine Stadt im Werden?’ Jaques Herzog praised instead for a dialectic approach where the unbuilt gears to the given, providing a space potential and ‘hesitation’. The assignment for studying the vertical development of the city of Basel has been hijacked by the architects and the artist Rémy Zaugg, to interrogate the physical nature of the city, its infrastructural system, and its geography to formulate possible stories of the city, and multiple conjectures about its ‘becoming’.

While both analyzed positions revealed a certain prophetic capacity, their interplay showed the distance between an eschatological narrative and a negotiation with the here and now, resulting in different use of the unbuilt category.

As part of the S AM exhibition ‘What If – Unbuilt Architecture in Switzerland’, Marco Zelli, of the Zurich-based collective Forum for Architecture Theory (F.A.T.), is moderating a round-table discussion with Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou and Jacques Herzog (Herzog & de Meuron) on the topic ‘Unbuilt Matter’.

Architecture History displays an intense dialectic between what comes to being and what remains on paper, constantly questioning the boundaries of the discipline and its conditions of being. The Unbuilt can be the premise to explore an unprecedented field of freedom and experimentation or the unfortunate result of conditions that didn’t allow for the realization of an idea.

The debate will explore the subjects of the unbuilt and its agencies through the lens offered by two different texts selected by the two guests. Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou proposes the storyboard ‘Life or the image of truly modern Architecture / Supersurface, an alternative model of life on Earth’, produced for the eponymous Superstudio movie ‘Vita/Supersuperficie’. Herzog & De Meuron selected the text ‘Eine Stadt im Werden?’ (English Title ‘A Nascent City?’): an urban study made by the office itself and Rémy Zaug in 1991/92.

Together with Emmanuelle Chiappone-Piriou and Jacques Herzog we will explore the underground life of unbuilt architectural ideas and their capacity to influence both built architecture and architectural discourse precisely on the grounds of their ‘not have been realized', navigating between the paradigm given by the two selected texts.

Registered participants (mandatory) will receive the texts per email prior to the event.

A few days ago I had the pleasure to be guest critic at the atelier Carella and discuss interesting projects with great collegues and very engaged young students. It is always good to close an year with new beginnings.

During the Workshop “Design Indeterminacy: Structure and Device” a wide ecosystem of strange creatures, spanning between micro-architecture and mega-furnitures, flourished between columns and slabs.
To the utmost monotony of the generic landscape corresponded the biggest variety of devices.
Here a few projects from Excercise 01:

1 Metabolic Tetris
Giovanni Cirillo, Diego Perini

2 Teatro Telescopico
Marta Crestani, Beatrice Cusinato

3 Sottoscala
Ruth Amissah, Sabina Jezkova

4 Greeneyes
Yana AbuElAssal, Vittoria Agnese Beato

5 Ingranaggio
Teodora Buccilli, Giulia Foscaro

6 Un’altra scala
Michele Martinello, Francesco Negrini

7 Confetti
Andrea Braiato, Matteo Pastina

8 La torre infinita
Shoghag Armoudjian, Nicolò Piazza

9 The bat move
Elif Akman, Christina Christodoulou

The results displayed are an excerpt from the first excercise of the workshop, which I have been developing with the precious support of @_lorenzovicari_

“Design Indeterminacy: Structure and Device” Is based on a proposal I submitted individually for the first selection phase of the IUAV WAVE 2022

It has been executed by Marco Zelli and Lorenzo Vicari, Fabio Don, and Filippo Brutto.

MiesUsed, 2020. Collage by @fabiodon, commissioned by @archfondas.

A Building of Buildings. Back in 2020 for the non-governmental organization 'Architektūros fondas' we had the opportunity to reflect on the relationship between the permanence of a structure and its content.

«There is a drawing that communicates an idea quite clearly. It is a drawing taken from the American weekly magazine "Life" in an issue of 1909 and that in 1978, has been republished by Rem Koolhaas in his famous volume "Delirious New York".
In this drawing are represented very typical detached houses with sloping roofs, perhaps single-family houses, of those that can be seen everywhere. The houses are all different and all individual, almost to show the character and personality of those who live in them. All of them even have a garden planted to complement. The particularity of the design is that these houses are not juxtaposed side to side in a horizontal sense but are stacked vertically.
Rem Koolhaas will use it in his argument because it provided a reference point for „The High Life“ concept.
In the caption at the foot of the illustration we read: „1909 theorem: the Skyscraper as utopian device for the production of unlimited numbers of virgin sites on a single metropolitan location“.
But this is not the aspect that fascinates us in this illustration. What fascinates us is the presence, the strong presence of the load-bearing structure that allows the single-family houses to be stacked. It goes without saying that in the illustration the single house is only a metaphor of what the structure will make possible: the maximal customization and individualization of its inhabitant.»

The work of Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz and his 1997 project entitled "paraSITE" was one of the highlights of the lecture we were honored to deliver last night during @iuav_wave 2022. 📷 by @filippobrtt

During @iuav_wave I took the chance to expand on a notion I actually got to know in Venice, during my studies and cultivated ever since...
Must have been Agamben’s fault or maybe @_amsterdamboot_ ...
