Here’s a trailer for my first narrative short I had a crack with writing directing and editing. Hot Honey Melt. Composed a bit of music for this trailer also because why not? Thanks to @tazhmusic for the mix/master.

Back in London for the first time in three years, Melissa’s friendship with her ex-partner Sean is thrown into turmoil by a chance encounter with an American couple on holiday.

With energies from the day lingering, Melissa struggles to maintain their boundaries amidst her fears for Sean over his recent actions.

Damn, I learned a hell of a lot making this film. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the things you want to take with you to the next one, but more than anything, I still feel really blessed to have had such a great band of people together that made the energy of these days so fun.

Special thanks to @za.nes_ for not only cheffing with Chan, Sonny and Taz (that Dahl was elite) but also supporting me through all the process.

In 2021, I visited Pote’s childhood home in Praslin, St Lucia. Getting to know his family and sharing a part of his life as a long time friend is a memory I’ll always treasure.

The trip was an emotional one. Eight years since his last visit. In the lead up, we talked about his difficulty adjusting to the UK as a boy and how it complicated his feelings going back. It represented the marrying of his two worlds. To return as a man, established as an artist and with a song he had written - “Natives” - that sought to reconnect him with his heritage.

We discussed filming a promo for the record. I brought along my Sony a7III and my nan’s old Pentax KX. We planned to get footage of him in the water and I wanted to shoot 35mm film portraits of his family. Covid got in the way. Then the portrait roll was damaged by seawater. Luckily I’d also been filming bits. We got a version out. Months later I found myself looking through the footage again.

Things rarely go as expected. It’s never really A to B on projects. It’s compromise. Pivoting. In the footage I found what was itching away at me. The story of my friend reconnecting with his childhood home. I believe the emotions that tie us to places aren’t easy to explain. We feel it. These places connect us to parts of ourselves. To remind us. To nourish us. To teach us to love all the pieces of our story.

I had my story. Editing however, was a mix of joy and frustration. The clips I had made me wish I thought of it sooner. It was all the things I wish I’d done. I struggled making peace with the technical limitations. “It could have been so much better!” I derided myself. Different lenses. A proper cinema camera. Where St Lucia is concerned, colour is everything. If you’ve ever worked with these 8 bit Sony files, you know these 16mm emulation looks. To me it was lacking. It’s not the quality I wanted. But you sit there and you have to remind yourself that the technical aspects aren’t always the defining factor. It’s a story I wanted to tell. I might hyper-fixate on what I see as errors, but I decided it was better to let it go and allow it to be a moment in time I was fortunate enough to capture. Full film on Youtube
