Who is Raschelli Linz?

Raschelli Linz is a graduate student pursuing her doctorate under the directions of Dr. Sarah Milton. She is researching several maternal factors that can impact sea turtle nest hatching success. In her spare time, Raschellli enjoys going to the gym, snorkeling, and the fiber art of needle felting.

Who is Kylie Harrison?

Kylie is a Master of Science student in Dr. Milton’s Comparative Animal and Marine Physiology Lab. Her research focuses on sea turtle nesting ecology and conservation, with a particular interest in the many threats that sea turtle nests encounter. As a Marine Turtle Specialist at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Kylie is well-equipped to pursue these interests through hands-on work and research. Outside the lab, she enjoys reading, playing video games, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with her cats, Zelda and Rogue.

Sargassum friend or foe?

A recently published paper, Physiological Effects of Sargassum Beach Coverage on Three Species of Sea Turtle Hatchlings, by Marine Lab alumna Abbey Appelt, M.S. and Dr. Sarah Milton, examined the effects of varying degrees of sargassum buildup on sea turtle hatchlings’ beach crawl to the ocean. While green turtles showed some ability to navigate the seaweed barrier, all studied species (loggerheads, greens, and leatherbacks) experienced significant delays in reaching the water. Interestingly, the extended journey did not result in significant energy costs as observed using blood glucose recordings, however the study suggests that increased travel time and frequent tumbles, resulting in the hatchlings being flipped on their backs could elevate the risk of predation.

Plastics in the ocean don't just affect turtles, they affect us as well.

Many sea turtles are facing threats as a result of pollution with some examples being fishing lines, fishing hooks, and microplastics. Heather Seaman, a Ph.D. candidate at Florida Atlantic under Dr. Sarah Milton, is investigating the impact of plastic ingestion on sea turtles. Knowing plastic is a major issue, she has begun participating in plastic free July to limit her exposure to plastic and to keep it out of the environment.

Happy International Women’s Day from the FAU Marine Lab!

International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to shout out some of the incredible women working at the FAU Marine Lab and the FAU Elasmobranch Lab. Whether it’s sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, octopus, or sea grass, every member brings such passion and curiosity to their research endeavors. They are leaders in important departments and programs within the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. They support students at every step of the college pathway, making research opportunities more accessible. Most importantly they show that there is so much more room for women in science. Thank you to every member of both labs and enjoy International Women’s Day!

Turtles and Plastic Part II

Rachel Southards, and undergraduate student at FAU, presented her research at the International Sea Turtle Symposium in Thailand recently. Rachel has been working with Heather Seaman to study the effects of plastics on turtles. Her poster was titled, “Plastic ingestion by green turtles (Chelonia mydas) with fibropapillomatosis (FP).” Amazing job, Rachel!
