Wow what a night 🙏 Dreamtime in Newark: Aljira and the Making of Global Contemporary Art is open to the public at the Newark Museum of Art all the way through June 2027 🫡

Please visit this exhibition and see for yourself the fruits of labor of all dedicated participating parties, from the Museum itself, to curators Alliyah Allen and Tricia Laughlin Bloom, curatorial assistant Monisha Bernard, curatorial, collection & installation teams at the NMOA, Victor Davson and Cicely Cottingham, yours truly at The Aljira Archive Project + archivist Josie Naron and historian Mark Krasovic, the loaning artists & collecting bodies, the NMOA staff who served us delicious cherry limeades at the opening reception, and each of our individual guiding lights for this kind of strange yet embodied and necessary culture work, my continual two who are Emma Wilcox and Evonne Davis. Not to mention countless other teachers and mentors, like Fausto Sevila and JC Lenochan who were in the room and others like Bob Richardson and Kennis Fairfax who weren’t.

This was work, but isn’t it great that we get to celebrate our work 🙏

TAAP Artist Spotlight: Fausto Sevila @faustosevila is one of the original artists who came looking for studio space at North 7th and Orange Streets in the Roseville section of Newark, NJ. He participated in the 1984 inaugural exhibition when the space was simply named Aljira, at the beginning of what would become Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art. Sevila will be featured in the upcoming exhibition “Dreamtime in Newark: Aljira and the Making of Global Contemporary Art” opening on October 15, 2026 at the @newarkmuseumart.

“I was born in Santiago, Cuba in 1960, but lived in central Oriente at the foothills of the Sierra Cristal, the birthplace of two revolutions. I lived with my grandparents, parents and sister. My formal schooling started in 1970 when we arrived in Elizabeth, NJ and where I still reside. I took my first Art Class at Douglass College and finished at Mason Gross with an MFA. I’ve had the privilege of working in the Newark Public Schools for 34 years. I was also an adjunct professor at Rutgers and Essex County College … Art for me has always been a healing force. It helped me to heal the rift between living in a more natural environment (Cuba) and a more manufactured environment like in the US… ”

“Visit to Bayou Road and Other Paintings” by @victordavson (curated by yours truly) is on view at the @artscouncilofprinceton until November 8 🙏 this Saturday 10/25 @ 3-4PM is the artist talk where I’ll be moderating a conversation between Victor Davson and Cicely Cottingham @cicelycottingham about his work, influences, why Cicely is an important connecting thread behind this entire exhibition and why nature feels like an inevitable subject for artists to broach.

I’ve been struggling with disappointment these past few months - but some guidance from the last full moon in Aquarius showed me, disappointment is merely a result of misaligned expectations - when you release what doesn’t serve you, you’ll make room for that which does. ✨🌝

Reflecting on these images from the past few months, I’m reminded of just how lucky and grateful I am for the magical people (& fur babies) in my life who trust & believe in me 🙏🫶 leaning into these deeps ties lights me up, and gives me the inner strength and energy to keep going.

Since May,

I hosted my 2nd yoga retreat at @blockislandinns 🧘

I worked with a group of organizers @auntiesforliberation to get a transphobic council member off the biggest school board in Manhattan, and we were invited to grand marshal at @nycpride 🏳️‍⚧️

I organized our 5th annual @galathea_court block party 🎉

I photographed 8 weddings, including a queer microwedding giveaway for @pridegrows 🌈

My baby mama had a baby (IYKYK) 👼

Old friends met new friends 👯

We twerked on the bayou 🐊

I dreamed up new collaborations 💭

I spent quality time with cherished loved ones 🥰

I had hard conversations ❤️‍🩹

I found new creative outlets 🦄

And I just landed in Costa Rica for the wedding of one of my oldest friends @lavanyaraj 💍🤩 in Guanacaste- which happens to be where I attended my first yoga retreat, and decided to commit to getting my yoga certification 😌 BIG full circle moments over here. Thanks @sheflowsandgrows & @radiatewellness.co for inspiring me take this life-changing leap!

Welp to another happy 2024. It brought happy times, sad times, and a whole family member to the Sevila Family. Here is to a new year, a new adventure, and a whole lot of love between all of us. 2025 here we go!

Hi everyone. I know you want to know how Fausto is doing but unfortunately I cannot answer the incredibly large number of calls and texts. So here’s an update: he’s taking small steps in the right direction. Breathing is improved and other things are becoming more stable. They are now starting to ease off the sedation and begin the long road to consciousness and rehabilitation. Keep us in your prayers and thank you for all of your continued support. I will try to keep you updated as best I can.

Great exhibition "Each One Teach One- Perserving Legacy with Perpetuity" by @artintheatrium & @morrismuseum with a fantastic group of artists.
So inspiring to hear their connection as mentor/mentee and their friendship.

Thank you to my godfather of arts @mansamussa973 who got me started in my collage work, and the continuous support and encouragement to create new work. So much appreciated!!!
